I'm living in Japan right now. And the Japanese people are in constant motion. They walk everywhere and ride bikes. yes there food is healthy. Lots of fish & rice. But they are physicaly fit as well. I see elderly people who in the states would be bedridden or riding around in carts, these people are walking. Even when it looks impossible. So don't believe the rumor that it's just the food. it is never just the food.

I think it is healthy. When I was over there last year, my host family ate really healthy food such as rice, fish miso soup sashimi; and they way they cooked it played quite a big part in how healthy they food was. Also, japanese people don't eat a lot; everything is in small portions, yes even dessert! they really know how to tell when enough is enough. There are although and TON of extremeley unhealthy japanese foods, namely their junk foods ad foods from the convenient stores. they are not good for you. It's alright to eat them once in a while (although, on my trip we travelled heaps and had to eat a lot of convenient store foods so by the time we got to our homestay families we were just about dying for home cooked meal!) coz they probably stuffed with preservatives and msg...
to experience the REAL japanese diet you'd have to live with a homestay family, and even then they might try to make more 'western' meals to make you feel comfortable!

Yep, very well known to be healthy as it's traditionally fresh and low in saturated fats (except for tepanyaki, which is deep fried and delicious!) The fish used in sushi and sashimi are high in protein and the fats contained are primarily omega oils which are good for brain function and joints. Rice is very good for you and as they say, a billion people can't be wrong. Rice has a low GI (Glycemic index) which means slow release of carbohydrate and no sudden spikes in blood sugar like you would get with junk food. Overall about as healthy as you can get.

Yest it is healthy plus the Japanese do not over indulge, they only eat what their body needs and they drink lots of green tea which is high in anioxidant.
