I know this might sound odd, but whenever I read about Japanese food it is always about their great beef and various seafoods. So is chicken very common in Japan? I never really hear about it ^-^. Also is it expensive like beef?

I live in Japan, and actually chicken is VERY popular!

Maybe because it's the cheapest meat I can think of ...!!?!!

Dog and cat are NOT on the menu though, despite the racist, moronic comments that a couple of people have made!!

It's very unusual to find whole chickens in the shops though, because your average Japanese oven is pretty small - they're combination microwave / toaster / fan / convection ovens, to save space in the small kitchens! For a couple of days before Xmas you can buy small chickens ... I jokingly refer to them as 'pigeons' because they're almost as small! The rest of the time it's mostly chicken breast with the skin - that's the cheapest cut - and strips of chicken breast without the skin, or chopped legs. Occasionally you can find chicken legs, and in December they become very common! I think they keep them frozen from earlier in the year, especially for December! You can NOT buy testicles - or at least I've never seen them..! But chicken skin IS sold - I don't buy it myself though! Anyone who bothered checking would find that chicken feet are part of Chinese cuisine - not Japanese.

Have you ever heard of Yaki-tori? Chicken bits barbecued on sticks! Very nice, although I avoid the ones with just chicken skin!

One of the most famous domburi varieties is oyakodon - chicken and egg!

Japanese beef IS very famous, but it's ultra expensive because there aren't that many cows here, so many people only buy it rarely and choose to buy foreign beef the rest of the time - that used to be American, but with their BSE fiasco and then leaving banned material in some of the beef public confidence in it is VERY low, so even though it's no longer banned I still haven't seen it in the shops! Probably never will now that they plan on sending unmarked GM meats with their exports. Australian beef is the usual thing to find in the shops - and it's a lot cheaper than Japanese beef!

The fish and seafood section in the supermarkets is bigger than the meat section, in general. But it's not as cheap as it should be - in my opinion - considering the fact that this is an ISLAND!

I'm living in Japan and no chicken is not that popular. I see pork and beef all the time though. And of course seafood. I haven't been to a Japanese grocery store in awhile but I would think it's pretty cheap unlike beef.

Well, it probably is not as popular as seafood since Japan is an island nation, but yes, they do eat it there! They eat parts you and I'd never think of eating...chicken feet, rooster testicles, etc!
