Well my older brother is 20 and we just threw him a surprise party with just a bunch of his college friends. I recommend -
1) HOT WINGS, MOZZARELLA STICKS, & CHIPS(and such) - appetizers
2) GREEN BEANS -w/ maine entree
3) MUSHROOMS - w/ main entree [ sauteed portabella work best w/ steak]
4) BASIC SIDE SALAD - w/ main entree
5) DESSERT, fruit & cake & maybe champagne or wine would be good.
Also, with the mashed potatoes, bacon bits are great on top. Also, try crushing some croutons putting them in the mashed potatoes. That's a favorite for many.

Top the steak with something so it doesn't look plain on the plate.
You can use something as simple as crumbled bleu cheese, some onion rings, or elaborate as a nice rich truffle demi glace.
Presentation is huge in food. You eat with your eyes prior to tasting the dish. For the special occasion such as yours, you want the dinner to go well. I'm sure you will prepare the food to perfection. Just enjoy the night.
Oh yeah don't forget the grilled asparagus !!!!

Instead of mashed potatoes try this recipe. Cook your potatoes as you would for mashed but instead of mashing them put them in a baking dish with olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix together and bake in oven until crunchy brown on top. Marinade the steak in lemon juice, fresh garlic, fresh basil, olive oil, italian season (put in food processor) salt and pepper. Make tzitiki sauce. Yogurt (drain to get water out in a paper towel in a colander), one cucumber peeled and seeded, garlic, one onion lemon juice and lemon zest, salt and pepper and olive oil. Chop the cukes, onion and garlic fine or in food processor. Mix all ingrediants in a bowl. Serve with bread, pita with steak and on potatoes. Crumble some feta cheese to go with it and greek olives. For desert serve something a little too sweet and chocolate this will help get rid of garlic breath. Another appetizer is bruschetta. Just toast up baguette slices and then top with fresh basil and tomatoe slice. Sprinkle cheese and backe to allow cheese to melt. After you toast the bread scrape the bread with whole garlic cloves for a little extra flavor. Good Luck

What are his favorites? When I was a kid on our birthday we got out favorite meal. A good side for steak is mushrooms sauteed with onions. Of course some people don't like either of those things. Green beans are always a great side to complement a white and dark item. Steam them then toss them with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper. Or how about a small salad of spinich leaves and sliced cherry tomatoes tossed in equal amounts of vinegar and olive oil and flavored with salt, pepper, and parmasean cheese. Keep color in mind. For apps., small toast rounds with a slice of mozzorella and topped with sundried tomato in olive oil and baked till crisp and melted. Really good stuff. Good luck to you.

Do you like him that way? Serve something like strawberries and a dip. Then feed them to him.
If he's just a friend, then try something less romantic. Maybe some cheese with a little wine before dinner.
For a side, try a casserole like broccolli or asparagus.
