Well, assuming it is an adult party, bring a nice bottle of wine. It is a classic thing to bring whenever you don't want to arrive empty handed.
Kids party. Silly string and gag gifts (fake poop, vomit...rancid flavored jelly bellies etc.) You will be a hero.
Actually, come to think of it, I have been to adult parties where these would work too! Bring both!!!

It depends on the age group.
Adults- A bottle of Merlot, Port or any type of Alcohol.
If you want to take food-- go with a desert, Apple Pie, or a quick tub of ice cream, or a store bought Chocolate cake.
If its a healthy group, Baby carrots & Cellery sticks with low fat cream cheese.
or just a bottle of Sparkling Non Alcoholic Wine (with or without).

Go buy a potted plant and a bunch of different sharpie markers. Take it home and decorate the pot with the markers to say Happy Birthday or their name or something witty!
