it is a polypeptide hormone. But we only know it as insulin in the hospitals or medical professions. It is written on the drug chart as insulin, there are many forms of insulin though, Some long acting and others medium to short (quick) acting ..depending on the individual patient and their blood sugar levels at the time.

Different types of insulin have different generic brands, if that is what you mean.

There's Novolin or Humulin in the R, N, U, and L forms (thought U and L have been disconnected).

Novolog is insulin aspart

Humalog is insulin lispro

Apidra is insulin glusine

Lantus is insulin glargine

Levemir is insulin detemir

And then there are mixes also.

Human insulin: an insulin produced in the laboratory, using genetic engineering technology, that has the same structure as the insulin found in the human pancreas.

Human insulin analogue: insulin produced in the laboratory, using genetic engineering technology, that has a slightly altered structure compared to the insulin found in the human pancreas; this alteration changes the onset and duration of action of the insulin.

Bovine: from cattle. Bovine insulin is usually made from the pancreas of cattle.

Aspart: insulin aspart. A copy of human insulin made by recombinant DNA technology (genetic engineering). This is an ultra-short acting insulin. That means it starts to work very quickly.

Lispro: insulin lispro. A copy of human insulin made by recombinant DNA technology (genetic engineering). This is an ultra-short acting insulin. That means it starts to work very quickly.

Neutral insulin: scientific name for a type of short-acting insulin. It is a clear fluid with zinc and insulin crystals dissolved in it. Sometimes referred to as regular, soluble insulin, it may have the word neutral or the letter ‘R’ (for regular) after its brand name.

Isophane: scientific name for a type of intermediate-acting insulin. Also known as NPH.

Lente: scientific name for a type of intermediate-acting insulin. May have the letter ‘L’ in its brand name.

Ultralente: scientific name for a type of long-acting insulin. The insulin is combined with zinc (as with other types of insulin) but this time into large particles. The large particles take a long time to be released into the bloodstream after the ultralente insulin is injected into the body tissue and this gives ultralente its long period of action. The brand names may have the letters ‘UL’ after the name.
