Cut it in half. If the core is caramel-brown, and spongy, it is probably rotten. Also, if you bite it, and it has a whiskey-like aftertaste, it's probably begun to ferment (eat a few, and tell me if you get drunk!)... A wrinkly skin doesn't necessarily mean the apple is bad, it means it is just a little dehydrated. These are really good, b/c the flavors actually concentrate some. Great for baking!

When they get soft squishy and a really dark brown almost black! Apples don't stay in my fridge long enough to go bad. A few times thou'
I bought apples and there were a few bad ones
in the 5 lb bag.

You will see or feel soft spots like bruises. And fruit flies will start eating it as well. Apples stink when they start to rot. n

WHEN YOU CAN FEEL SOFT SPOTS ON IT ,AND IF ITS REALLY BAD LITTLE BUGS WILL START FLYING AROUND THE FRUIT BASKET
