what does the doctor do?

If you are female then you will have to remove the bottom half of your clothing. You may be giving a paper towel as a modesty cover to hold over your pubic hair. Not much point in this however as they are going to be looking at the bits you'd rather they didn't see any way!

You will lie on a bed and they will examine your bits, first they will do a visual examination to check for warts or herpes and lice etc. They will then check that everything feels normal inside i.e. the cervix are in a good position. They will then take swabs with a cotton bud of the vagina, your urethra (wee hole, you feel a slight scratch when they do this) and they will probably do a smear test at the same time by inserting an instrument and scraping a swab from your cervix.

They are also likely to take a swab from your mouth if you have given oral sex.

Dependant on what you are being tested for they may also take a blood test.

They will also take a urine sample from you to test.

Aside from the physical aspects they will ask you some questions about your sex life.

All in all it's not the worst experience but it's certainly not something you'd want to do every day.

It's a good and sensible decision to have tests done though. Well done for deciding to do it.

The tests are either done by swabs (they take a mucus sample from your cervix), blood tests (needle in arm!) or urine tests (you pee in small plastic container which is sooooo hard to aim at correctly!), depending on what STI you're testing for.

Syphillis, HIV and Hep B are all blood tests.
Chlamydia is either a urine test or swab test (depending on your healthcare region)
The rest are usually swabs.

Swabs are done in the same manner as a smear test, and none of the tests are what I would call painful.
Hope this helps!

It does depend what you're being tested for but 90% chance you'll be asked to pee in a container of some kind.
Swabbing etc is all common too.
Sometimes they will get a long metal thing (no idea what its called) and sort of insert it, then they open it up to open you up (if that makes sense) so that they can get a good scraping and check for any visual signs.
The results will be quick (except for HIV) but you need to leave at least 2 weeks from when you had sex to when you get tested otherwise it won't all show up. For HIV tests you have to wait at least 3 months.
Good luck- hope you get the all-clear xxx

I had one last wednesday, as i am just starting a new relationship... I gave a urine Sample, Had 3 small vials of blood taken (they test those for HIV, Hep B and Syphillis) and a swab test, which, being a guy, was quite uncomfortable! the procedure for you should be similar, and i would recommend you have it done, if you suspect you have something, or just for you / your parners piece of mind... whole thing took 30 mins or so. well worth it.

The doctor would visually inspect you , may do swab tests to be annalized and or take blood tests, ask you what you think you may have been exposed to and do the tests that are most likely needed.
Then they would contact you when the results were in probably less then 3 weeks.Good luck.

With men or women the most common procedure is swabbing. They pretty much skim your genital area with a cotton swab and then send it to the lab. It's painless. If you're a guy, it's uncomfortable (but not painful).

Be safe. Take care. Good luck.

Small blood sample and vaginal and anal swabs, thats about it.Nothing to worry about as far as the test itself goes.
