Get her a trip to the doctor to find out what she can and can't do.
Take it from there.

Fast heartbeat can be in rhythm or arrhythmic also.
Let us first discuss rhythmic fast heartbeat, which is in medical terms called sinus tachycardia. The amount of blood the heart pumps in a minute is called cardiac output which is the result of multiplication of two things- stroke volume (amount of blood pushed in a single beat) and heart rate. In stressful situations like during walking, running etc. heart has to increase its output which is done either by increasing stroke volume or by increasing heart rate. Young and healthy hearts can do this by pumping extra blood (increasing stroke volume) without increasing heart rate too much. In elderly and ailing hearts extra blood cannot be pumped and this job is done by increasing heart rate in even smallest exertions. In your particular case this is the most likely reason. The heart of your mother must not be getting proper amount of blood supply to it's own walls because of narrowed / occluded coronary arteries which after proper investigations (coronary angiography) will need procedure to widen these arteries (angioplasty) or a bypass surgery.
In case of arrhythmic tachycardia the impulse conduction in the nerves of heart gets disturbed and may need continued medical treatment with adjusted doses or some cardiological procedure also to set abnormal nerves into action.
Bothway the problem should immediately be attended by an experinced cardiologist in a full grown set up.
Tachycardia itself further compromises blood supply to the heart and hence should never be ignored. Good luck !

Tachycardia (fast heart beat) signals the inability of the heart to carry blood throughout the body...the heart speeds up to compensate for the lowered push of the heart muscle...many physicians use digitalis to slow and strengthen the contractions. I suggest a bit of exercise...slow....arm, leg and body movements will help increase heart strength. As with all parts of the body, exercise is vital to keeping fit....your mother has been idle too long....help her enjoy a few more years by insisting on a slow path towards better health. I am a physician.

She must be suffering from Coronary Artery Disease. Best thing would be to consult a cardiologist. The symptom shows that she has a blockage. Ayurveda capsule, Rudved is very effective in treating coronary artery disease without surgery.
