It's a medical term that comes, as so many of them do, from Greek.

It's a combination of two Greek words, idios, meaning "it's own" or "itself," and pathos, meaning "suffer." So the word literally means "it suffers by itself" or a bit more colloquially, "it doesn't come from anywhere else."

It means that this happens and we don't think that it has an external cause.

Sick sinus syndrome, a disease of the sinus node, the heart's natural pacemaker, where it begins to degenerate for no known reason, is an example of an "idiopathic" disease or condition. It just happens and we don't know why.

Hello =)

When a doctor uses the term, it means "of unknown cause or origin"......and, generally speaking, most things that happen to us are idiopathic in nature...

for example, a patient presenting with lung cancer, who was never exposed to carcinogens, would be said to have cancer that was idiopathic........

Namaste,

--Tom

Idiopathic, in reference to medicine, means OF UNKNOWN CAUSE.

It means that there is no known cause to the medical problem.

Idiopathic means unique to the individual. Generally it means "this is happening to you and we don't know why."

I'll look it up in my medical dictionary and get you a precise definition in an update.

Update:

idiopathic: pertaining to illnesses whose cause is either uncertain or as yet undetermined.

Dunno. Literally. It means that the cause is not known, implying not that an adequate investigation has not been done but that medical science has not progressed to the point of understanding.
