There are many reasons people have for smoking. Most smokers start before they're 19, with the average starting age being 13. People start because they think it looks cool, or their friends get them to try it. Many people get fooled by the advertizing for cigarettes. The ads make smoking look really cool, but the truth is that smoking isn't cool... it's stupid!

Tobacco contains nicotine of course. Nicotine is as addictive as cocaine and heroin. Nicotine can make people feel alert and energetic, and it can also make a person feel relaxed. Nicotine works by attacking your brain, but your brain gets used to it after a while, and you have to smoke more to feel the effects of the nicotine. That's why people who have been smoking a long time have to smoke one after another. Some smokers smoke continuously, which is especially harmful to their health. Their poor lungs never get any clean air!

When a person tries to quit smoking, the amount of nicotine in their brain drops, and they feel sick. That's why smoking is so tough to quit. For days, weeks, or even months, the person feels like they need a cigarette. That bad feeling is why about 7 out of 10 smokers who quit go back to smoking before 3 months have passed. It's very tough to quit smoking. That's why you should never start!

If you know someone who smokes, you should encourage them to quit, even though it's tough. It's never too late to quit smoking, and the sooner they quit, the healthier they'll be!

People smoke because of one of the most successful early product marketing concepts of the past century. It is learned in school as a textbook lesson.

1. Appeal to a target market of young teenagers and adults
2. Associate with sex appeal and popularity.
3. To men, associate with the macho image, to women, the sultry vixen. To both, a rebel image.

The formula was so very successful, the money from the sales literally flowed like floodwaters.

It was only 50 years later that the medical scientists finally connected all that smoking to health problems, when all the machos and the vixens became senior citizens and got sicker than their non smoking counterparts.

My opinion? I hope the smokers will stop smoking. I would like to keep my favorite smoking humans around me as long as possible.

Some people smoke because of peer pressure or because their family members have smoked. Other people start to smoke just because they try it and like it or cant seem to quit. I believe that smoking is just as bad as someone who has a drinking problem. In the way that it hurts organs in your body and can give you cancer. Why would anyone want to do something that can cause damage to their body? HELLO?!

I feel that smoking is a habit and that it's also a drug that will kill you.I have lost a Father,an aunt,my Father inlaw,my brother is now suffering from it and also My Sister inlaw is now dying because of smoking.I have never smoked and some may say that I don't understand whatit's like but to me I see no difference in it then I do crack or any other drug.I know that it has a warning on every pack and I just wonder why anyone would smoke knowing what it does. They just aren't hurting themselves they hurt their family. They hurt their children that I know because My Dad suffered for almost 20 years before he passed away.I'm so angry because I have a daughter that is a smoker and she is also a diabetic. No one is allowed to smoke in my home or my car and now no one will smoke in my yard.I feel that I shouldn't have to watch them kill themselves.I have ask my daughter why she takes 4 shots aday to live and yet she is killing herself over a cigrette. It doesn't make any sense.

"Nicotine is an addictive drug. It causes changes in the brain that make people want to use it more and more. In addition, addictive drugs cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The good feelings that result when an addictive drug is present — and the bad feelings when it's absent — make breaking any addiction very difficult. Nicotine addiction has historically been one of the hardest addictions to break.

The 1988 Surgeon General's Report, "Nicotine Addiction," concluded that
* Cigarettes and other forms of tobacco are addicting.
* Nicotine is the drug that causes addiction.
* Pharmacologic and behavioral characteristics that determine tobacco addiction are similar to those that determine addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine.

People smoke because they get addicted. My personal opinion is that smoking is a filthy, expensive, and unhealthful habit, and anyone who does it should keep it to themselves so they don't kill me with their damn secondhand smoke.
