I am 29 years old and have struggled with minor respiratory symptoms for almost as long as I remember. However, my symptoms were not serious enough to diagnose anything or seek treatment for. I think at times my parents thought I was "faking". Lately I have the feeling of not getting enough air almost all the time. The symptoms are definitely worse at night, when I am laying down. Sometimes my chest feels tight, sometimes I have to sit up striaght with my arms over my head to breathe, and sometimes I have to yawn to get in enough air. For the past 2 weeks or so I have also had a vague pain in my left rib cage. I think my symptoms have been getting progressivley worse since having my 2nd child 15 months age. Any suggestions? I am trying to get a doctor's appointment next week.

Most people with respiratory problems - individuals with emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma tend to have worsening symptoms when lying down. Symptoms improve when sleeping sitting up or with head elevated. Respiratory problems can be worse if you are a long time smoker. If you are overweight and snore, then you could also have sleep apnea problems. If you are having respiratory or sleep apnea problems, then these can cause you to feel wiped out all day long. You should be evaluated by a pulmonologist to determine exactly what the problem is. There are very good treatments for these conditions.

If the pain was on your right side I would have side it may be gallbladder attacks. Anxiety would make you feel you cannot breathe, as in a panic, the muscles in your neck area would feel like they are going to collapse, your face would go numb, lips feel numb. Now you could also have a pinch nerve in your back that would make it feel like your having a pain in the side under the ribs which actually the disc in your back, or neck is striking a nerve causing the pain which can make you feel like your not breathing properly. When you feel this way go to the E>R> go when you having this problem so they can see when it is going on to see where it is really coming from. This way they can see the signs not just hear the symptoms.

This is not "faking it". You can have serious problems, heart problems, asthma or something else even when you are young. Call the receptionist of your doctor and tell them what you have said here. Don't be shy or hold back. You're going to need a serious work up. In the meantime, try to stay away from anything or anyone (smokers?) who could be causing you to have an allergic reaction or have an asthma attack. Do not over-exert yourself, and get plenty of rest.

Have your doctor test you for Sleep Apnea, the special test will confirm. If you are overweight symptoms will be worse.

Good Luck
