You probably have atrial fibrillations which is a very common heart problem. The upper chambers of the heart quiver rather than beating in rhythm. This complication comes and goes and usually is not a problem but it does raise your chances of having a stroke which can be a major problem. You might need to take a daily aspirin or blood thinners. You are young for atrial fibs but it is certainly not unheard of. Also atrial fibs have a genetic component so possibly your mother has the same problem. In any case you need to see your physician and see if you need a beta blocker to slow down the fibrillations and/or a blood thinner. Stress or too much caffeine can trigger A fibs, so relax.

Go to a doctor and get checked out. I have had heart palpitations for years. I saw a good cardiologist and was put on meds that helps me. They are usually not serious, mostly caused by stress, too much caffeine, or like you said, inherited. They can be scary which increases your anxiety about them. For your peace of mind, get checked out by a doctor. Good Luck

Sometime medications can be the cause of heart palpitations.
The best heart supplements to take are magnesium,
Co emzyme Q10 (CoQ10), L-Carnitine, and fish oil.

Taking a calsium citrate/magnesium citrate(500mg/500mg) will probably stop the palpitations. If you are taking any drugs, check
with your doctor before taking any supplements.

Taking a 1/2 tspn of cinnamon once a day may also stop the
heart palpitations.

Palpitations are usually benign, but you need a cardiologist or a physician to know for sure.
You could just be experiencing an anxiety attack.
Go see your doctor.
