I am on Soc. Sec. Total Disability. The person that said to find a lawyer, (IMHO) is 100% dead-on. You will First need to ask your Doctor if he will sign the papers that state you are Totally Disabled. (to work) This is one of the 1st questions your lawyer will ask you. SOCIAL SECURITY also sent me to their own Doctors...no problem for me....all part of The whole process; took me about a year...(were talking Government here). You will have a 2-year wait to be Medicare Eligible. The Internet has tons of help. Including the Soc. Sec. Disability site for Definitions of specific Disabilities. If u r near Concord, CA, I can recommend my Lawyer 100%. The Attorney u want is the one that does ONLY this for his/her work. It is WELL worth the $$....& it cost you zero, upfront.
He/She will also tell you a.) if you can work, @ all. b.) If yes, how much $$ u can earn. I want to add that these are YOUR BENEFITS; that you & I have paid into for many years. This is NOT a Gift...GO 4 IT!! Good Luck!!

I've seen SSI (supplemental security income) mentioned in some of the answers and the SSA has strict guidelines as to what disorders are eligible for SSI. Complete disability is not required but if you're interested in this, look into it. As far as neuropathy, I'm not sure this makes you eligible for SS benefits. But go ahead and contact your local SSA office and request information for both. You have nothing to lose.

I work for an endocrinologist and the first question is are you truly disabled? Can you walk? Can you work? Because the forms that we fill out for SS disability are very specific. Not many doctors wish to commit fraud and state someone is disabled if they are not. Too many people want disability when they are still very functional and ruin it for the people who truly need it causing them to have to hire lawyers etc.

I'm a nurse. I think this is a good idea. Always do what is best for you first, you are worth it. Also do things that makes you feel good inside, you deserve it.

Document EVERYTHING. Start saving all dx's from doctors visits, Get letters from your doctor, statements from friends/family about your disability, what you are capable of doing or not.
