Is it drugs, promiscuity, lack of education, or carelessness in using protection?

Unfortunately, it is due to socioeconomic factors. Certain diseases and illness affects those of lower socioeconomic status due to lack of education and resources. This is particularly true of infectious diseases. There is no evidence that African Americans are any more promiscuous than any other race. However, there is a disproportionate number of African Americans living below the poverty line. This forces them into neighborhoods in which crime is rampant, schools are sub-par, and community and health resources are very limited. This environment is conducive to getting involved in drugs and crime, both of which can contribute to the spread of AIDS (sharing needles, prostitution, etc).

In environments where sexual education is readily available and free information on AIDS and free distribution of condoms is available, there is a much lower incidence of HIV. Unfortunately this happens in communities with enough money and resources to provide these services.

I agree I think it's all of the above. And I do not like the excuse that no one has ever been taught about it. It's all over the media, schools, the news, in the entertainment business. Rap stars dying from it (Eazy -E being one of them) So being uneducated is a poor excuse. I think most of it is from carelessness. Some are growing up around adults/parents that are promiscuous and/or on drugs. What about television, all you see are black women half naked dancing around with no clothes on. Rap songs about sex. This is what black America has come down to... sex, sex, sex and more sex and it's disgusting. Wake up people!! The very thing that is brainwashing you is killing you.

It may be a mixture of all things. Primarily, from what I've heard, because there are so many closeted black men who live a double life as married men. They marry a woman, have sex on the side with men, and then continue sexual relations with their wives. It's the whole "down low" phenomena written about a few years ago. It would stand to reason that if one engages in unsafe sex with multiple partners, the disease will spread. Again, just what I've heard and read in news articles.

No bashing intended. All you have to do to answer this question is spend one day watching BET (Black Entertainment Television) on cable. Their culture has become even more sexualized than the American culture in general. Blacks are more promiscuous overall. I also believe that black males view the use of condoms as less masculine.

I think that promisuity and lack of fidelity are main factors

This was happening back in the 40's, at least there were fewer STD's
