I have had asthma since I was a teenager but it has only gotten worse within the past 6 years (I'm in my mid 20's). Because I'm still learning about how to deal with it, I tend to get embarrassed if I have to use my inhaler in public, or if I have to explain to coworkers why I was out the day before. I also get incredibly scared when I have an attack and usually end up crying - could also be why I get embarrassed about it...

Can anyone relate to feeling embarrassed by having asthma? Does anyone else cry when you have a bad attack? I just feel stupid because I'm in my twenties...

I've had asthma since I was 4 (37 now). I used to feel embarrassed as a kid, but now it is all about me being able to breathe. I try not to cry when I have an attack because it makes it worse for me. Don't worry about your coworkers. Some people will try to make you feel guilty for being sick. Just let them know that once in a while you will have to be out, and that is just the way it is.

I feel your pain. I've had asthma for 14 years now and have seen several doctors. The truth is, there is no known cure for asthma at the moment. But the symptoms can be prevented. It really depends on what causes your brother's asthma. Mine is usually dust and hot weather. But I think the universal method is using the control inhaler.

I cured my Asthma the natural way?

I have asthma and also am in my mid 20s, but I don't get embarrassed about it. I get a bit self conscious using my inhaler in the gym, but people don't really mind, and I don't care what other people think. People tend to understand what asthma is and that its not your fault for having it. If people are staring it is probably out of concern, which means they care, which is a good thing.

I have COPD, when I go anywhere I have an oxygen tank and a canula in my nose

Try living with those stares

I have a rescue inhaler, when it's a choice of using the inhaler or going to the hospital, I use the inhaler, it's cheaper an less time consuming..

You are gonna have asthma the rest of your life, get used to it.

I know it sounds like tough love, but it's real

I don't have asthma, however I do have a neurological disease and am now in a wheel chair, so I know what you mean about the feeling of embarrasement.

It took me a while to get over it, but my disease is not something I choose, nor did you chose to have asthma. If people ever bug you or tease you, they are insensitive jerks whom you should avoid being around anyway.

I'm not embarrassed when I need my inhaler just relieved that I can breathe. If you're having symptoms more than once a week I'd go back to the doctor and see if there is another maintenance med you can take.
