you are right there is Dhana Dal... we eat it as mouth freshener/mint after dinner... it's really really small and it's kinnda brown/yellow colored (right!). If it's not cooked (you can eat it uncooked) you can just crisp it up in a pan...keep on a low heat and stir it constantly but not vigorously for about 20min. if you want you add a lil lemon and salt (keep it for 10 min) and then cook it..it shouldn't change color when you crisp it or even easier way just put in the oven for about 30 min at warm (stir it frequently) and eat it after dinner (it's good for digestion) and it's good mouth freshener.

Hope this helps!! let me know if you have any question.

You probably mean chana dal. It's a legume (pulse), which means that it's in the same basic category as lentils. It's similar to yellow split peas, but it's far from the same product. You should be able to find it in any Indian food store, and you might be able to purchase it on-line as well.

The link below has a number of recipes that use chana dal.

Recipes to me always seemed to be guidelines to try to maintain. My mom used recipes to the letter when possible, but having some tough times, there would be some ingredients she would have to substitute with something else and the end product was just as tasty as the original. I think some things can be used as a template and substitutions for some ingredients isn't forbidden. In fact, Rachael Ray does it all the time with stuff, so it can't be all bad.

Dhana dal is roasted split coriander seeds(not the same as chana dal) It is commonly served as a mouth freshener in India, is prepared by roasting coriander seeds with a pinch of salt. But this old Indian practice can do much more than just beat bad breath. Coriander seeds is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory in nature, and hence, consuming dhana dal after meals can have many medicinal benefits.
Aids digestion
Dhana dal can be excellent if you want to set your digestion on track. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology, some of the compounds found in coriander seeds like linalool and borneol aid in digestion and regulate bowel movements[1]. They help in the proper secretion of digestive juices and enzymes that assist in the smooth running of the digestive system. It can also be helpful in curing diarrhoea.

I cook better at home for my family than food in most restaurants and I NEVER use a recipe. Yes, I've learned how long foods need to cook, but everything else is improvised, like jazz! I use a leftover sauce (what did I put in that?) adding more stock to it. The bad part is I can't usually do the same thing twice but that's also the good part too! .
