I've read that you should never take an over-the-counter treatment, like Monistat 7, if you have never had a yeast infection or been diagnosed by your doctor. But is it really dangerous? I have the symptoms and want to treat it without a doctor. Does anyone have experience with this? I'd like to hear what you did and how it worked, and if you know how safe it is. I want to know if seeing a doctor first is just a precaution or if it's really a danger if you self-treat with an OTC medication.

Sometimes other infections have the same symptoms as a yeast infection. Seeing your doctor is not just a precaution because they can determine if it is indeed a yeast infection or something else. It really isn't "dangerous" to treat with an OTC med, but if it isn't a yeast infection the medication won't help you. It is best to make an appointment with your doc to be sure.

Hello, I'm on the second week and seeing definite improvement on my yeast infection symptoms:

Note that: If the yeast infection doesn't respond to over the counter treatment, prescription medication will likely be necessary. Similarly, if the symptoms return after two months of being treated, you should contact the doctor for professional treatment rather than resorting again to home treatment.

If this is the first time you have experienced a yeast infection, you should schedule an appointment to have the condition treated by a doctor instead of resorting to home treatment

The danger comes from mis-diagnosis. Some STDs can present similar symptoms and will grow worse if not treated. Seeing a doctor isn't just a precaution; it's the prudent thing to do.
