From time to time my breath gets really shallow, which makes it hard to exert energy and speak. I can't find a pattern to it. Does anyone know what causes shallow breathing?

Depends on your age and it has a lot to do with physical fitness.
Are you ill? Do you sit all day long? Do you exercise?
If you are feeling faint or dizzy call a doctor or 911.

If it doesn't seem serious maybe you just have somebody heavy sitting on your chest (gotta be hard to type that way).
