Potato chips are vegetarian - don't you think that is a fattening food??

Some people think that being vegetarian is a good way to loose weight - it is not!

A balanced diet without excesses is how you/they can stay healthy.

Being a vegetarian and eating a balanced diet takes WORK. Unfortunately people become vegetarian for the wrong reasons (e.g. it is trendy, they think they will loose weight, they think it will be healthier but don't put in the work to eat a balanced diet).

Diet and exercise are the only ways to be healthy. This has been repeated over and over for a reason. Please help your friend become healthy and tell them if they are not very careful being a vegetarian can be very UNHEALTHY.

One of the responses that follows shows how ignorant people are.
POTATOES DO NOT CONTAIN FAT!
http://www.mvproduce.com/spudfacts.html All too often the potato is guilty by allusion and association. Although the potato appears to be a bulky vegetable, it is 80 percent water, just a little less than in milk. Its association with high calorie toppings like butter, sour cream, gravy and mayonnaise dressing to name a few, puts the low calorie potato at a disadvantage. Just one tablespoon of butter will double the number of calories in a baked potato. There are many low calorie ways to prepare potatoes deliciously. Here are just a few tasty low/no calories ideas:

* Toasted sesame seeds
* Whipped butter and poppy seeds
* A spoon full of stewed tomatoes and a bit of grated cheese
* Melted butter or margarine thinned with lemon juice
* A mix of dried herbs: parsley, chives, basil, dill
* Mock sour cream (cottage cheese and lemon juice whipped in a blender)
* Chopped onion with coarsely grated black pepper
* Chive-spiked yogurt
* Salsa

When I do dinners for veg friends, I usually make pasta (because it's easy to make a lot of) with alfredo sauce and serve grilled chicken that meat eaters can add on top of the sauce. You can buy the jarred alfredo, but I make a semi-fake that's super easy. Just saute a few cloves of chopped garlic in a little butter, then add a few cups of heavy cream (enough to coat the amount of pasta you use) and heat until almost boiling. Add salt & pepper to taste, then slowly sprinkle shredded parmesan while stirring. Keep adding the parmesan until you get the consistency you want. It should be about the consistency of pancake batter. Toss with the pasta and serve immediately. (it doesn't reheat well) There are lots of other appetizers other than veggies & dip you can serve, like hummus and tortilla roll-ups and ricotta turnovers with marinara. A good idea would be to check out some vegetarian cookbooks at your local library.

You can gain weight with any diet if it isn't done correctly, contrary to the popular image of the "pale faced skinny veggie!" lol. Vegetarians can put on weight through too much junk food, too much fat ie cheese or eggs, or eating too many refined carbs like white rice, pasta, potatoes. I suggest your friend cuts down any high fat foods he might be eating and concentrates on wholegrains and lentils, beans etc. If he's eating a lot of processed soya products tell him to cut those down as well. If he eats more salads fruit and veg as well he should soon start to see the difference. Obvously exercise is always important with any diet, so tell him to make sure he gets enough daily exercise. If all this fails tell your friend to get a checkup with the doctor just in case there's another underlying cause.

chubby is from HOW MUCH someone eats, not WHAT they eat.

If you consume more calories than you burn you will gain weight.

lack of protein can make you feel hungry and then over eat. Adding more beans, tofu, etc. may allow him to reduce such things as rice, potatoes, or bread.

oils are very compact sources of energy (measured in calories) and must be kept to a minimum. if his brand of vegetarianism allows for dairy, eliminate all butter and whole milk.

Had a "vegetarian" girlfriend who ate copious quantities of ice cream... thus a weight issue.

well your friend could possibly be eating lots of mashed potatoes and other carb rich foods. And there's dairy. If he isn't a vegan, then cheese, butter and milk could be the culprits as well. Some times its just not the diet, even hormonal problems can contribute to weight gain.

too much carbs, probably from eating refined carbs that do not satisfy the bodies need for nutrition. vegetarianism is hard to do correctly, and probably somewhat expensive, especially if your country is subsidizing meat. I suppose they could be eating the wrong types of fat, also. Oh, and maybe he eats those artificial foods? Like garden burgers with super long lists of ingredients that don't sound like nature's bounty, or low-fat/low-carb foods that aren't naturally that way?

Like many vegetarians he probably eats too much foods that are handy, such as cheese, bread, chips, crisps, nuts etc rather than lots of vegetables.

Root Veg, Pasta, Rice, Bread has loads of Carbs in! Carbs make you hunger more! Normal Carbs dont digest very easy and stick around!

Tell him to stick to wholegrain stuff and avoid excess root veg like potatoes.

Also EXCERSIZE is the best thing in the world!

Good luck to your friend!
