What are some cause of "water" in your lungs? Is it treatable??

i know the best thing would be to go to the doctor..but it's for my grandma. my family really doesn't have money to take her into a good doctor. She lives in Mexico. Doctor's told her that smoke might have been the cause of this illness. We really don't know if this is true. Is there any treatment for this? She is anemic and she has pneumonia. my grandma is 90 years old. we are scared she might not resist a harsh treatment.

She also has cancer, I'm not sure if it's related. Also, she really can't eat solid foods, since she has a small tumor blocking her throat.

your grandmother doesn't have water in her lungs. what she has is called congestive heart failure. her heart isn't pumping blood efficiently enough to keep fluid off of her lungs from normal circulation. it is treated with lasix and is not a harsh treatment the body just flushes the fluid out through the kidneys and into the bladder. if she has pneumonia that is an inection of the lungs and the CHF and pneumonia combined will get worse and can lead to death if not treated with medications.

the only fix I know of is a Dr putting in a needle in the lung to drain the fluid ... both my mom and dad had it done ... quite painless they tell me. If left untreated she'll probably get worse ... since pneumonia is something that often is fatal for the elderly. There are many reasons for this to happen ... smoking certainly doesn't help since water in the lungs prevents breathing (less air in lungs) I think that's where the pneumonia comes in. If the body gets less air then there's a more difficult time with all functions including healing ... anemia also has it's own problems.

I wish you well on this ... Is it possible to go into an emergency room as they can take care of the fluid there.

Bless your grandma ... 90 years is a lot of living, may she get even more

While she could have congestion in her lungs from smoking or from pneumonia, if the doctor used the word "water" in her lungs, it could be from congestive heart failure. When people get old (and even younger people with heart conditions), the heart doesn't pump as strongly and efficiently. Therefore, fluid backs up into the lungs, rather than being pumped through the heart to the rest of the body.

She may need medication to help get rid of that "water", a diuretic or 'water pill'. She should also watch her salt intake. She really should see a good doctor, one who can take an x-ray and prescribe the proper medication for her.

If she is anemic she needs additional iron in her diet if she can eat more dark leafy vegetables that would be good, drinking orange juice helps the body use the iron more efficiently, if possible FGF which is available from pharmacy's is an excellent tablet to take and is not expensive, but I have to say with pneumonia that is a different story and she really needs to go to the hospital, I know it costs money but she needs proper attention at he age. Best wishes.

My ex was a respiratory therapist. She would do a percussion treatment on patients which meant she would cup her hands like she was dringing water out of her hands and then percuss or beat on the patients back. This would loosen up things.

She needs to go to the doctor as pneumonia is nothing to ignore.

Pneumonia IS water in your lungs. Anything can cause it.
Smoking, laying in bed too much, allergies, have a virus or bacteria. She needs antibiotics and to be up and walking around..
