I've been using albuterol with a USP propellant, now my pharmacy is only selling albuterol HFA and it doesn't work? The USP type worked great as a fast acting inhaler, the HFA type doesn't work for me? I know it's the same medicine with a different propellant but it doesn't help my symptoms.

USP is not a propellant type!
The mist velocity and particle are not the same, but the amount of drug delivered with each puff is identical. I don't what else to tell you.
The non-HFA propellant will no longer exist in less than 2 years.

The difference between the new HFA albuterol and the old style one is the propellant. The old ones use chloroflurocarbons (CFC). The new propellants don't have as much force as the CFCs. So, potentially, maybe the drug isn't getting into lungs as well. The FDA and the EPA has ruled that in the next couple of years all CFCs will be banned, even previously exempted drugs, like albuterol.

I have used the HFA type before and I also felt it didn't work. I had a near fatal attack while using it. Talk to your doctor and see if adding a steroid will help. I feel your pain. I'm dreading the day my pharmacy makes the switch.

I think you need to see your doctor and get on a maintenance regime. I don't think the propellant matters. Maybe it's all in your head or your condition is just worsening and has nothing to do with the change of MDI's. Either way talk to your doc.

Hi. I am not qualified to answer this question, but if you are an asthmatic and are not taking an inhaled corticosteroid I would strongly encourage you to do so. I used to use y albuterol daily, and now I don't use it at all.
