I had a bad chest infection last year and was also a mild asthmatic. I left the chest infection 2wks before I got it treated and it ended up lasting 2mths and I had 3 courses of antibiotics and 2 courses of steroids plus a steroid inhaler to beat it. I am now quite a lot worse with my asthma, when I used to use my inhaler once a week its now a few times a day. My lungs have been damaged by the infection. I was also lucky it didn't develop into pneumonia which could have killed me. My advice would be don't mess with your health its not worth it.

To help relieve the congestion temporarily, go into the bathroom and turn on the hot water in the shower and allow the room to fill with steam. Stay in the steamy room long enough for the steam to loosen the congestion-have tissues available. Also rub some vicks vapor rub on your chest and neck and a little under your nose for quick relief. When you go to bed pile your pillows so you are in an almost upright position or try to sleep in a recliner at a 45 degree angle to allow for drainage.

I was on amoxicillin for bronchitis and strept throat..ok..i had a hard time breathing too..ok this is going to sound weird but it does work...take off you shirt for 24 hrs rubbing honey on it every 3 hours..also you can try vicks vapo rub every 6 hours but then also you have walk around shirtless which is embaressing for some ppl at least for me it is but it does work. Since you will be shirtless anyways try filling up a hot (very hot) bowl of water mixed with honey and you breath it in while enclosing yourself with a towel..you will sweat, so its good to not wear a shirt or wear a t-shirt and also so your chest can absorb some of the heat. If nothing, at least it will relax you so can breathe normally a little bit and you can begin to sleep..seriousely try what I mentioned..one of them is bound to work.

a vaporizor helps with some vicks in it...or even putting your head over a bowl of steam with a towel over your head. Vicks on your chest and feet and around your neck. A hot shower and let me think...oh prop your head up on pillows or try sleeping in a recliner. Also sudafed or any type of cold medicine will not interact with amoxicillin. And for the pain try taking some ibuprofen or acetaminophen
Hope you feel better soon.

It sounds really simple, maybe even stupid, but it's an old trick to help your nose and lungs open up... And it's a whole lot healthier than antibiotics and that kind of stuff.
My mum and grandmother did it for me when I was little and it really works.

Pick an onion and put it besides your bed. It doesn't only help to breath, it disinfects your throath too...

I hope the drs didnt mistaken you symptoms for pneumonia. I had it and it sucks. Your chest hurts when you breathe in and out and there is a wheeze noise made from your gasping for air. And when I would sleep it was like i was suffocating.
