Maintenance medications such as Advair, Spiriva, Singulair(pill) help keep it at bay. Fast acting meds are used for acute onsets only. Like Albuterol Sulfate, Ipratropium Bromide, Xopenex(pure form of Albuterol) Combivent, and others. Maintenance drugs decrease the need for the faster acting ones. Talk to the doctor about what needs to be done.

I developed asthma as an adult. What has helped me recently is the QVAR inhaler and when I need the breathing treatments we use the pulmicort and albuterol combo that helps me through the week. Advair is nice, but Foradil is really good also. There are some really good asthma and respitory magazines out also with the latest treatments.

I have severe asthma and I am on Singulair, Advair, Prednisone and albuterol (inhaler and nebulizers.) See if her doctor has thought of adding allergy meds to her regimen. They seem to help some people.

Check with local drug stores; some drug companies have a free drug program, if you can not afford drugs
What form of asthma ? makes a big difference about the type drugs she needs.
