You cannot catch diabetes it isnt an infectious disease. Its either caused by the insulin producing cells of the pancreas giving up (type 1) or the body not using teh insulin as it should do (type2);

Diabetes isn't something you can 'catch' like a cold or flu. There are two main kinds of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a kind that people usually develop when they are young and we don't know what causes it (but it is definitely not eating too much sugar!!!). This is the kind that you sometimes see in films and on tv as people being really sick because they need to take their insulin (eg. in a horror movie they might be sick cos they can't get to their insulin!) or because they are having a hypo and need to eat sugar very urgently. It can only be treated by insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a kind that people usually don't get untill they are older - it's most commonly caused by poor life style - eg. eating too much sugar etc.. This is the kind that's most common and that is often on the news or TV programmes. It can sometimes be treated by improving diet or by tablets or insulin. Don't worry - there is no way you will catch diabetes off someone with diabetes!

Just for the record, Type 1 (Formerly called Juvenile) diabetes is an autoimmune disease. It cannot be prevented and has nothing to do with weight, diet, or exercise.
It is the rarer more severe form of diabetes. There is a genetic basis, and then a trigger such as a virus is needed for it to develop. It is not preventable. About .5 % of the population has this form of diabetes. Everyone with Type 1 diabetes needs insulin injections to live.
Most people are not even aware Type 1 diabetes exists, which is unfortunate.
90-95% of diabetes cases are Type 2, which can often be prevented with a healthy diet and exercise, and by maintaining a normal weight. There are other rarer and genetic causes of Type 2 though, which cannot be prevented. These are the minority of Type 2 diabetes cases.

Why do people keep coming out with this rubbish about eating sugar. Diet and excess sugar do not cause diabetes. Diet is important if you have diabetes, to be able to limit your sugar intake. Mine is called Mature Onset Diabetes and was caused by my having a heart attack My brother was the same. We are the first in the family to get it, so don't take the heredity bit to seriously either.

People develop diabetes by basically wearing their pancreas out. You are likely to get diabetes when you are over weight -especially if you have some extra baggage around your waist. You are also likey to get it if you eat too many sugary and starchy foods which are all sugars when broken down--this wears the pancreas out in its over production of insulin-which makes it soon stop producing insulin. High blood sugars are very dangerous for the potential diabetics and diabetics. Excercise is therefore crucial for diabetics to maintain their blood sugars.

You don't catch it like Aids or herpes, its usually heridetary or from being over weight...Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.

you don't catch diabetes its a disease. if you are a type 2 diabetic
then its because of eating the wrong foods and not taking care of
yourself. if its a type 1 its because your pancreas isn't working
correctly. only type 2 is hereditary. their is no one in our family that is type 1 but yet my son all of a sudden becomes a diabetic

you don't catch it.
People develop diabetes because the pancreas does not make enough insulin or because the cells in the muscles, liver, and fat do not use insulin properly, or both. As a result, the amount of glucose in the blood increases while the cells are starved of energy. Over the years, high blood glucose, also called hyperglycemia, damages nerves and blood vessels, which can lead to complications such as heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve problems, gum infections, and amputation.
