It is difficult to answer this question without a complete history and all the tests your husband has gone through. The main causes of cough are 1)post-nasal drip eg allergies 2) gastroesphageal reflux 3) ACE inhibitors-meds used to treat hypertension 4) infection eg valley fever, pertussis, bronchitis 5) neoplasm eg lung cancer 6) congestive heart failure "cardiac cough" and 7) psychosocial "cough tic". Of course there are many other causes, but if he has not been evaluated by a gastrointestinal doc, I would check this out. I have seen patients get better with the use of Prilosec as they have reflux disease. Also, has he had a CT scan?? Seen an infection doc?? Again, hard to pinpoint without more details. Good Luck.

These things cannot be tracked down without systematically ruling out different causes. If the coughing is not caused by infection or allergies, then the remaining possibilities are post nasal drip, side effects of medication, acid reflux, neurological problems, or physical changes to the lungs or chest cavity. A CAT scan of the head and chest would be a logical procedure to look for physical anomalies. To help narrow things down, your husband should keep track of any symptoms affecting the digestive system, lungs, sinuses, and ears.

Which allergies did they rule out? I developed an allergy to the polluted air of the city I went to college in. Spent a year on an inhaler (to stop the muscles that spasm and cause you to cough). Spent the summer in Alaska and it cleared up, though I have occasional problems when I am very tired. It is possible that he has developed an allergy to something so prevalent in the air that they don't test for it. He should be able to get a prescription for an inhaler that will treat the cough though it won't solve the underlying problem.
