It totally depends on the ingredients in the cough drops. Ricolla, Ludens and Smith Brothers are just candy and may rot ones teeth but probably wouldn't hurt the liver in any way. Cough drops with actuall medications in them such as Vicks formula 44, NyQuil etc etc can definately have an adverse effect on not only the liver but other organs as well.

Serious abuse of any sustance could potentially destroy your liver. The packaging says to not take for more than a few days at a time.
The reason you love the taste of them is they probably have codeine in them. Codeine IS a drug that has addictive properties, like pot or caffeine. People get use to the soothing feeling from taking it.
Here's some of the side effects from Wikipedia:
"Common adverse drug reactions associated with the use of codeine include itching, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, miosis, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention and constipation.[3]
Tolerance to many of the effects of codeine develops with prolonged use, including therapeutic effects. The rate at which this occurs develops at different rates for different effects, with tolerance to the constipation-inducing effects developing particularly slowly for instance.
A potentially serious adverse drug reaction, as with other opioids, is respiratory depression. This depression is dose-related and is the mechanism for the potentially fatal consequences of overdose.
Another side effect commonly noticed is the lack of sexual drive.
Codeine has also been known to interact negatively with some psychiatric medications such as reboxetine and venlafaxine."
