osechi-ryori

Colorful osechi-ryori are packed in layers of lacquer boxes, called jubako. Each dish in osechi has meaning, such as good health, fertility, good harvest, happiness, long life, and so on.

look up osechi - various foods are eaten but there are many symbolic ones such as Noodles and Mochi. You may have seen it before but Kagome Mochi - a 3 tiered mochi with a tangerine on top is in many Japnese households at this time and is eaten as ozoni (a soup).

Mochi is a big thing. I remember growing up my mom would make a sashimi platter, miso soup with tofu and seaweed, spinach soup with bonito stock and mochi, and kinpira (gobo root) on the New Year holiday. Also, of course, sake. She would also make this fermented read bean thing that she mixed with a raw egg and poured over the rice. Personally I don't like it and it stinks like you wouldn't believe, but I hear it's rather tasty.
