#1 - Basically, you can either cut meat out gradually or cut it out all at once. Different things work for different people--only you know yourself well enough to say which is best (and best does not always mean easiest!) for you.
#2 - To be vegetarian, just don't eat meat. Replace the meat in your diet with veggies (fresh is best), beans, nuts, other legumes, soy products, and so on. To be vegan, also eliminate dairy, eggs and honey.
#3 - Remove yourself from the temptation if you can; don't go to a hamburger joint, avoid the kitchen when meat is being prepared. There are also lots of meat substitutes on the market, which may help you get over some cravings. The good news is, the temptation doesn't last forever. Once you're accustomed to a vegetarian diet, meat really does lose its appeal.
#4 - Be clear, be respectful, and be well-informed. Know why you're doing this, and express your reasons to her in a way that does not make her defensive--stress that you are doing this for YOU, and that you respect her choice to continue eating meat just as you hope she will respect your choice not to.
Tell her that you will try to prepare your own meals often so that whoever cooks for the family will not be stuck making two different meals every day. If you don't know how to cook well, ask her to help you learn. Be prepared with articles about vegetarian nutrition, so that she can see you have put thought and effort into how to do this the healthy way.
Good luck!

well first off, I'm a vegetarian, and i have been for almost a year, and I'm 10+3 in age. Well to stop the habit, slowly stop eating meat.you can't eat a lot of things like, chicken, fish , spaghetti, tacos, cheese burgers;etc. and if you have temptation, then you need to buy bocca chik'n. it's soy and spicy and they make up for the cravings. Just tell your mom you want to give not eating meat a try, you shouldn't full out and say i wanna be a vegetarian, i did, and my family made fun of me and waved meat in my face. And start fixing your own meals at dinner so she doesn't complain about making 2 different meals. hope that helps.

My dear friend, Swami Vivekananda says, "all the actions we see in the world, all the movements in human society, all the works that we have around us are simply the display of thorught, the manifestation of the will of man. We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care of what you think.....". He also says, ..." habit is the second nature , first and the whole nature of man; everything that we are is the result of habit"
So thought and habit are the two things that make what we are. Eating meat is a habit for you. You think that you should eat meat. It is a temptation for you because YOU think that it is more delicious, more healty and more pleasing for you. If meat is so delicious, why not ALL humans are meat eaters? Because they don't have the habit.
Choosing your habits is in your hands. How you want to tell your mom is something you have to decide as depends on the relationship you are having with your mom and the family 'habits'.
As a vegetarian, eat everything that doesn't breath and has blood in its veins or has the potential to change & form of a living thing(ex: egg). For good nutritious balance, eat lots of lentiles, soy products, milk & milk products which will replace your protein, some calcium and othe nutrition intake from meat. In the beginning you will eat a LOT because vegetarian food is soft to digest compare to meat and your intestines need to get used to the routine. Read lots of books on nutrition. Internet is a good source also.
How long you can wade off the temptation to eat meat? It is upto you and how you can control your mind and change your habits. Don't punish yourself if you eat meat out of temptation. It just proved that you need more control on your mind.
Happy vegetarianism.

#1 - I like to eat meat. How can I stop this habit?
It's not that easy. It's just like dieting. Just stay away from the meat section in the supermarket. Try not to pass it and make sure if you have family dinners, have a special plate just for you.
#2 - What can I and can't I eat?
There's several things you can and cannot eat. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegan for more info. And it's not just eating. Stay away from animal fur coats and stuff.
#3 - What do I do if there's a lot of temptation?
Try to not give in. It might be hard, but try.
#4 - How can I tell my mom that I want to be a vegetarian?
Just simply tell her. She will most likely accept it, but if she doesn't, you know, try to convince her it's okay like saying you are helping animals.

When I became a vegetarian, I first stopped eating red meat rather than cutting it off completely. I find this made the transition easier. I enjoy a good garden burger once in a while, but if your entire diet is fake meat, then maybe you should rethink being a vegetarian.
Or, you could just cut out red meat and still eat chicken and fish. There are different kinds of vegetarians, so you can fit one that suits you.

1-think of 2 things: your health and animals. you wouldnt like to be slaughtered to go on someone's plate, would you? animals have feelings too. and also your health. did you know that in every pack of chicken or port etc there is animal ****? how healthy is that?!?!?!
2-no meat, period. fish is meat. fish have feelings! how would you like it if somebody held you under water for 5 hours?
3-think of what i said in #1. and simply walk away. but trust me, once your a strong vegetarian, there are no temptations! its so easy!
4-simply tell her, like "mom, im going to be vegetarian." let your mom know that you know what your doing, and provide alternative suggestions for the meat. do some research and let her know exactly why your turning to a vegetarian, and hopefully she'll understand.
well, i hope that helps. and remember, karma will get to you if you keep on selfishly killing inoccent animals. you can do it!!!!

the biggest challenge is the convenience of the fast food restaurant. You have to basically fix your own stuff before you go to work. In big cities, there are more choices. I work in a rural area and the eatery places are so home cooking and unhealthy but when you don't bring your food well I end up eating there, regretting that I did it.
There are various stages/levels of vegeterians. Do your HOMEWORK. The dummy series book, Vegeterian Times, Idiot series. Depending on what level that will dictate what you can eat.
How to stop eating meat? Look at any video of slaughter house tours. Visit a slaughter house.
