When I first became a vegetarian I just incorporated my favorite veggies with my favorite foods (IE: mac and cheese with broccoli, my fav omelette filled with tons of peppers, mush.,onions and potaotes, lasagna only vegetarian) I did not care for many tofu products at first but I like them a lot now. Try Yves Veggie Chicken Burgers - they are awesome!
Make a salad and add some Yves mock chicken or beef strips.
To be vegetarian doesn't mean you have to miss all your old favorite foods just substitute veggies for meat. Instead of a Chicken satay try veggie satays, instead of beef meatloaf try veggie meatloaf using Just like ground. Make your favorite Chili but use tons of beans and veggie and if you like the Just like ground.

The best tip I have is learn to count protein. One of the toughest parts about being vegetarian is getting enough protein. It gives you energy and boost your metabolism and immune system. Either consider a vegitarian source protein shake or bar each day and or count (find out) protein per serving of various things. Best proteins are beans, legumes, lentils, etc. and some tofu products.

Get a copy of Anne Marie Colbin's book "Food and Healing" (has some recipes and alot of good guidance) and maybe a few vegetarian cookbooks too. Try a few dishes out. Experiment, experiment, experiment. Also, try going to a restaurant or two that specializes in vegetarian cuisine. Go with some friends or family and try a few different dishes. Alot of people at home make vegetarian food really blandly, badly, etc. A professional vegetarian cook might be able to offer you more interesting choices. You could also maybe take a cooking class or two? Turn it into an enjoyable experience of discovery instead of a chore.

Remember that alot of ethnic dishes you might already like are vegetarian or possible to convert vegetarian very easily, (japanese, indian food, chinese, thai, mexican, etc.)

Good luck!

You are a pescatarian if you eat fish but no other meats (animals). If you are feeling tired or weak, eat more protein! there are plenty of sources of protein for non-meat eaters like all kinds of meat substitutes (soy products), legumes, lentils, nuts, seeds and whole grains. This may seem contradictory, but the more you exercise, the more energized you will feel. Being overweight is never healthy and will make you more lethargic. Reduce the fatty foods like dairy and boost your fresh fruits and veggie intake, and try to stay away from processed foods and refined sugars. I'm not at all a doctor, but this is what I personally have been told by them. Give it a try, do your own research, but also it is a good idea to see a professional. They will only ever offer you suggestions, they can't force you to do anything you don't want. good luck and good health to you!

A friend of mine went vegetarian a couple of months ago and now she is eating a lot of pasta. Because of all the carbohydrates in pasta she has put on a lot of weight. So if you do go vegetarian be sure to eat a variety of foods.

If you're going to do it for health reasons, go for it, just take some protein, etc. supplements, but if you're doing it to make a statement about killing animals, I would have to disagree. Also, will you be eating seafood and eggs even though you are a vegetarian? It would be a good idea. I was a vegetarian for a whole year but I didn't take enough vitamins, so I had all kinds of health problems. But there is some good food you can still eat, it just takes a little work to find it. Best of luck!

What food do you think they eat that you dont like? Google the Vegetarian Food Pyramid instead of listening to some of these other people. I for one eat vegetarian versions of MANY recipes.

Only you can answer this question. If you don't like the food they eat maybe it is not a good idea to go vegetarian. My Brothers girlfriend use to be vegetarian. She started eating meat again. I think there is always substitute for stuff. Like turkey for vegetarians.

I made a conscious choice about 2 years ago to stop eating meat. I feel better, I have lost weight, but not lots. My cholesterol is fine. I substitute beans, fish, and peanut butter for protein. I also drink protein shakes for breakfast a few times a week.

It's all in personal preference. It's great your family supports you. Mine still roll their eyes at me and call me a pain in the butt.
