Over the last week once in awhile, I get a pain in my chest behind the left breast. Also, once in awhile when I breathe I get a little whizey up the middle of my chest from my stomach up. I am not sick, nor do I smoke and am not around people that smoke. The pain in my chest sometimes gets to be bad enough that I have to take shallow breathes for it not to hurt. Then it goes away. I had this when I was younger and my doctor said it was due to growing pains - well I'm 25 now and not growing....

Just wondering if anyone else had this and what it could be from?

To start, growing pains is not real. It is just a cop out answer when the doctor either doesn't know or doesn't think it is a big deal.

It could be a heart problem, but it could also be Acid Reflux Disease (or GERD). A gastro-intestinal doctor can help you with that if that is the problem.

The symptoms are similar and both occur on the left side because your stomach actually resides on your left side right below your heart.

Go to a Doctor that can give you a EKG or other tests to find out for sure it is growing pains or something serious. Don't play or toy with info you got many years ago.

Doctors are people. They put on their lab coats one sleeve at a time, and they do make mistakes. The are human, and not perfect!!

There are a number of conditions that could be causing this. I suggest you see your primary care provider for evaluation. Your doctor may wish to refer you to a pulmonologist for further tests. For your peace of mind, I truly doubt that this is due to a pneumothorax, you just haven't described the symptoms. I also don't believe you need to go to an ER. This doesn't describe cardiac involvement for a male and especially not for a female.

I have experienced this type of pain from gas. But being in your chest, doctors (most usually) advise you to go straight to the E.R. while it's happening and see what's going on. I'd do it.

sounds like a collapsed lung. are you tall & thin? If so, I recommend going to the emergency room and getting a chest xray.

I have had this happened to me twice.

"spontaneous pneumothorax"
