I bought brewers yeast to put in food I cook to keep my nutrients up since I am vegan. I thought when I bought it that it was cream colored or a lighter yellow now it is a darker yellow closer to a brownish yellow.

Yes it can go bad. The first answer applies if you've purchased fresh refrigerated BW but not if you've purchased freeze-dried BW (either active or inactive). The 'shelf stable' one are generally good for around 6 months to a year once opened depending on storage conditions. Longer shelf life is obtained by cooler temperatures, low light levels and controlling exposure to oxygen.

Your BW sounds like it's beginning to oxidize.

Wow, Im vegan but have never used brewers yeast. My brother brews his own beer here in Australia and he only buys it in the quantity he needs at a time. Some of these answers are very informative. Will now ask my bulk health food outlet next time I am there.

Yes, yeast is a living thing and can die. To check if it is still alive, place it in some water that is warm enough to bath in with a little sugar dissolved in it. It will become foamy after about 5 minutes.

It can go bad.

If you keep it in the fridge it can last at least 3 weeks. What may have happened with yours, is that it has oxidized from begin uncovered.
