Since she is only 18 chances are she's just not realizing how serious it can be. Young people tend to think nothing bad is going to happen. Also, she may have something in her life that makes doing everything necessary to control the diabetes.
I've known many middle-aged people who are diagnosed with Type II diabetes but who get their sugar levels under control by starting with insulin, losing weight, adjusting their habits, and eventually by just eating right. (They no longer need insulin.)
I don't know if there's a way to get someone to do what is healthy for them. You may just have to assume her doctor will eventually get through to her.
She does need to know that as long as her sugar levels are high any number of organs could be damaged. She needs to know if her heart gets damaged she could end up having limbs amputated. She does need to know she probably won't live long, even if she lives into her middle-years. You may want to ask her to look at her two feet, ask if she likes having them, and ask if she'd like to have them sawed off.
If she's using drugs (and smoking too, but that almost seems like the least of her problems at this point) she's got big problems, and I don't think you are capable of doing anything about them.

im not how cigarettes and weed affect diabetes ( it doesnt really affect me, i find my sugars are actually controlled more on weed, weird) , but alcohol you have to be careful about. Since when you drink alcohol, your liver processes it right, also your liver is where your sugar reserves are, if she drinks to much, thats all her liver can handle is the alcohol, if her blood sugars start to drop, she might not even realize it, then pass out from the diabetes. When she passes out her liver cant release sugar from the reserves to help her blood sugars rise, so its a risky thing. you should look out for her if you with her when she drinks , because if she passes it out, it may be from diabetes not from alcohol. About her not taking her shots, she should start taking care of herself more. Apparently if your blood sugars are high for to long , it can lead to blindness and other bad things in the body

whew! knowin sheis only 18, she's killin herself sofly. literally. havin diabetes is quite hard coz it will bring her a lot of complications when not treated properly.. wel, considering that she's taking insulin, it is still not enough for her to overcome her illnes. she beter live a good life by exercising, proper diet and proper medications..

sorry there's not much you can do. patients with diabetes tend to get really stubborn. they just don't listen, you know (not all of them, just the one i know). some of them even deny they have it. so, you just have to be there, yell at her when you think you have to and try to help her, remind her and encourage her to keep a healthy lifestyle. if you are roommates try not to have booze in the house. it's tough, standing by a diabetic, i know. but, believe me, it's worse for them. you will have to be patient.

unfortunately it sounds like your friend may have to spend another 3-4 days in ICU before she wakes up. if she has type I diabetes and is doing all that. you can't help here, sounds like she needs to address some low self esteem issues...
