Is a fasting glucose enough? Or do you have to go a step further and have a glucose tolerance test? Thanks.

Only your doctor can tell you for sure. He will also tell you at that time, if you do have this, every single thing that is it necessary for you to do and not do. We can not diagnose your case on here.

I was diagnosed with a simple finger prick test, but they suspected I had it for 5 yrs before I was tested. A fasting glucose is a good indicator. I would have it done twice, if it comes back high both times then diabetes is a good diagnosis. It is not always necessary to have a glucose tolerance test done. I had 2 done before I was diagnosed and they showed normal and then 2 yrs later I had it.
Just get the test repeated, if it comes back once high and once normal do it a third time. Work with a diabetic specialist type dr, don't depend on your GP to know much about diabetes and how to control it.

I hate that glucose tolerance test. I had several of them, in the past. Like 15 years ago, and they did not show anything. Well I did not have diabetes back then. But I went in for blood test and the doctor did a fasting glucose test and found mine. I think they do extra test, for the money it cost. Of course they would be outraged at me saying this, but I know its true. So, fasting glucose will show your sugar level and your doctor can tell you want it means. Normal reading is less than 110. Mine was 170 when they found it.

A positive fasting glucose level (repeated, of course) is enough to make the diagnosis of diabetes. An oral glucose tolerance test is more sensitive though, and may be positive when fasting glucose is still in the normal range, suggesting a prediabetic state or very early diabetes.

a fasting glucose test and a glucose tolerance test is the same thing really. The aim in both is to see how your body copes with an ingestion of glucose. When its a fasting test they are just making sure of what your normal blood sugars are. It's pretty conclusive either way as your body can either produce insulin to cope with the glucose...or not.

Blood testing for the A1C count. If the count is above 7, you have diabetes.
Finger pricking using a glucose monitor, If the numbers are high before meals over 120.

well I am a type 1 and I was watching er and saw a patient with symptoms that I was having so I saw my dr. and he did a fasting blood and it was 550. Only problem it took him 2 weeks to figure out it was type 1 and not type 2. 2 weeks and 20 different pills later I took my first insulin injection and now I take 5 a day.
