I made an indian dish and it's much hotter than I thought it would be. Is there something I can add to the dish to calm the heat down? Any ideas would be helpful.

You can add some coconut milk (unsweetened) or plain yogurt to lower the heat. Also, as said above, serve with rice. Serve a salad of cucumbers in yogurt alongside to cool your mouth.

Not knowing much about Indian food, I am not sure this will work, but I have used sour cream in chili to tone down the spiciness. It works great with Chili and adds a nice flavor to the dish.

add the red chili powder/green chili that was listed in the recipe in small increments. Spiceness is quite subjective so do not follow the recipe states. If you're new to Indian food I wouldn't put anymore than one teaspoon red chili powder or 1/2 a green chili.
If it's too late and the dish is already prepared then I would add sugar or some yogurt to it.

Sure you can try cutting back on the curry, cayenne or any type of pepper. Another type of heat killer is something sweet like sugar or even peanut butter.

Either the coconut milk (yummmm) or sour cream would work. Yogurt also would work. Or cream cheese. Dairy really cuts heat.

Potatoes always "suck" spices out of foods that aren't supposed to be there. You can always take them out when you think the dish is right.
