I'm not sure about the Black Eyed Peas.

I have heard the reason people eat pork products on New Years day is that the Pig is the only animal that eats in a forward motion. All other animals swing their heads backwards when eating.... A pig pushes things forward with its snout.... It is just symbolic of moving "forward" in a new year.

During the Civil War the Union Army raided the Confederates's food storage camps. They took all of the food except the dried black eyed peas because they thought it was hog food.
So, black eyed peas were all the southern Confederate soldiers had to eat during the New Year. That is why the black eyed peas is a southern tradition. Supposedly this happened in Lousiana.

Many of us do not. Most traditional holiday foods are regional, and usually date back to the first settlers in an area.
for example:
Many New Mexicans have tamales for New years. Tamales are spiced pork wrapped in cornmeal and cooked in a corn husk.

In some -parts of the Northeast it is traditional to stuff a holiday turkey and serve it with sauerkraut.

from wilstar.com:
Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity. Cabbage is another "good luck" vegetable that is consumed on New Year's Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. In some regions, rice is a lucky food that is eaten on New Year's Day.

black eyed peas represent the hope of renewal and prosperity for the new year. Ham represents the plentiful harvest of the year before. My family eats kielbasa and sauerkraut for New Years. My husbands family eats St. Basil's bread or vasilopita for New Years. Every ethnicity finds a way to celebrate the promise of a new year. As humans we take the bitter and the sweet and bind them together in food as in life. Good luck to you and happy new year.

It's just a tradition.

The peas represent good luck, cabbage or green are for prosperity, the pork is for moving forward, and cornbread for close family.

Also, it's tasty.

area A: sure, i've got heard of that area B: No. i don't think it. I do have faith in getting each and all of the failings i'm engaged on ideal now out of ways so 2009 may well be as sparkling as attainable.

it's tradition. peas are for good luck, rice because it multiplies, greens for money, fish for success and pork because a pig lives well all of its life.
it's silly, but traditions are meant to honor our people, not the traditions themselves
