I sympathize with you as I have acid reflux and an esophageal hernia. These conditions are very painful. I once went to the emergency room complaining of chest pain...the exact symptoms you mentioned. They sent me to a hospital in another town to have an arteriogram done and it showed that my heart was okay and the arteries were flowing good. I then went back to my doctor and she set up for me to have an endoscopy done...a tube scope down the esophagus...to see if anything was going on there. They in fact found that I had an esophageal hernia and that was causing symptoms to make me think it was my heart. My doctor put me on Prilosec and Norvasc together for this and it has helped a lot. Now I'm not saying you have an esophageal hernia as you would have to have an endoscopy test done to find that out. Also, if you have a bad cold, even if you're not coughing, the phlegm could be irritating your lungs to where it is making it tight. In this case, you might see your doctor and ask him/her if you might need a chest xray to see if there's a possibility you might have pneumonia. If the heartburn medicine helped you when they gave it to you and your pain went away then more than likely it isn't your heart. Once you find out whether the problem lies in your stomach or your lungs then you can get the necessary treatment for your ailment. Good luck.

H I ! Acid refux is called Gerd and I have it . Bad I will enclose a few sites that explain the problem to you !t can lead to what is called a Larengeal spasm and it is scary there are many causes though so don't get scared because a full stomach of Spicey food can do it . If it continues it can damage your esophagus. Good news though it is treatable .I didn't know how to control it either so I asked my drugest
I also didnt know that asid pumps can be controled with a zantac equivalent and gaviscon or tums like lozenge are not the same stuff and can be used in combination for this problem . Good luck I know how bad trhis feels And remember this advice is worth what you paid for it LOL I'm Nopt a doctor just a sufferer like you Good luck and hope it helps.

i had exactly the same thing on wednesday night i was in a and e. The pain was unbelivable and all they did was give me a tablet (omeprazole) and some peptac (like gaviscone) an hour later they sent me home sayin it might be a stomach ulcer and i need an endescopy to look in my stomach.I have now been to see my doctor and he said it could be one of two things gall stones or an ulcer.Ihad gallstones four years ago and had my gallbladder removed so obviously it is not gall stones , i am now awaiting my endescope test .I have to take peptac after every meal and two of the above tablets a day until i get the test to control the pain. nothing touched the pain i had on wednesday night for about three hours and i had the same again friday morning it was agony i hope you get an answer soon but definatly see your own doctor they will know you best.

From what you are saying you have a combination of symptoms

1. the acid reflux may be arising from a failure of the oesophago gastric valve to close properly (Hiatus Hernia) leading to an acid related oesophagitis. The pain from this condition may mimick the pain of a heart attack. Only a careful examination and investigation by your doctor may infirm or confirm either/both

2.You may be having a common cold as well. This, affecting the upper part of the respiratory tree only, may not be associated with coughing.

3.Both conditions may be responsible for the 'Run Down'feeling

Yes, you might have acid reflux. I had it for ages and it took a throat specialist to figure it out. Mine was so bad it was affecting my throat and I couldn't swallow properly. Regular antacids only work for a little while -- try an acid inhibitor like Zantac or similar, since these will work for some hours, at least overnight. If it doesn't go away in a day or so, you really should go see your regular doctor, since something else could be wrong. Feel better, and Happy New Year.

I've heard that prescription meds don't work. They only lower the amount of acid in your stomach, which is not good because you need acid for digestion. The REAL cause (some of the time) of acid reflux is not having enough acid in your stomach. So that's why you have pain and indigestion after a big meal. Try taking a teaspoon or two of vinegar (apple cidar is good for you overall) every morning. I've heard that will prevent it and cure it.

I've had this problem for years, and at times I just wanted to keel over and die.

But in saying that listen to the doctor if you don't like your doctors opinion ask for another doctor to re-check the first doctors.

Acid reflux is more or less indigestion.

What caused mine re-occurring had nothing to do with my chest but another part of my body. And would you beleive it was a gall stone. A "Gall Stone" of all things. I had got to laugh at that.

When it comes to chest pain that it seems to be killing you and it lasts for more than 5mins see a doctor ASAP DON'T leave it for another day or later when you're feeling better. You might be having a heart attack.

You have my sympathies and I know how you feel.

It sounds as if you may have pleurisy, which is an inflammation of the membrane around the lungs. I had it once and it felt like somebody had punched me a few times in the lungs. If both lungs are involved, it's entirely possible to feel it throughout your chest. Mention this possibility to your doctor when you go back and see what he says.

I agree with you - it doesn't sound like acid reflux.

You need to see your "regular" doctor. Emergency room doctors provide only emergency care. Their main concern was to rule out that you were having symptoms of heart disease.
Chest pain can be a symptom of a myriad of diseases, a good physician will be able to determine the cause of your symptoms.
You don't mention your age, your lifestyle (eating habits, weight, smoking status), if you have fever...things that will be important for any doctor to know.

Get a second opinion. Any time you go to ER, they physician tells you to follow up with your regular MD. You definitely need to get checked out. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to your heart and lung health. Don't play around with it.
