Just pull or scrape them off with a knife, any that are open before cooking, throw away, similarly, those that remain closed after cooking, throw away, it means they're dead, and could have been for some time, and nasty bacteria could have built up

I am right handed so I will describe it that way.
In your left hand take the mussel with the opening outward. In your right hand take a sharp curved veg knife and from the top scrape this down hard with your right thumb against the blade. Pull the beard as you are scraping and then rinse.
It is quite hard work, but worth it.
The oat meal answer is not for de-bearding but for removing silt etc from the inside of the mussel while it is still alive.
Tap all mussels and discard those which do not snap shut. This means they are dead.
Likewise discard any that are not open after cooking.
Wish I could join you but my allergy towards them are growing and growing and it is now dangerous for me to eat them!

When you are washing them, they will close but the beards will hang out from the shells. Just pull on the beards - you may need to give a wiggle, but they do come out easily,
