My friend has a problem with her live-in boyfriend--he snores at 6 point Richter scale! He has tried a nasal strip (don't know what brand) and tried sleeping on his side, stomach....no dice.

Someone suggested surgery for sleep apnia, but I am trying to see if someone out there was lucky without having to go through surgery, or if there is a particular kind of device that works.

his is a disease called sleep apnea. It can be dangerous as well as annoying, as it can damage the heart. Those nasal strips don't work for most sufferers. He needs to get to a sleep clinic to get a firm diagnosis and get a prescription for a CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine. Surgery is seldom done for apnea anymore, as it has downsides, and CPAP just works so very well. CPAP stops snoring 100% and enables the snorer to sleep properly, so he will feel better during the day. It is like a miracle!

CPAP has to be individualized to his own needs, so he can't buy one without a prescription. Most insurance will pay for the sleep study and the machine. (If not, you can get a good machine - with prescription - at www.cpap.com for under $400, and it's worth every penny.) Please have her make him an appointment to get a referral (if he needs one from his primary doctor) right away, as sleep clinics often have long waits, and he needs to get this taken care of ASAP. She will sleep better; he will sleep better; and he will not risk the heart damage done by untreated apnea.

Oh, some people will tell you that only grossly overweight people have apnea. That's a myth - lots of normal-weight people have it, too.

He needs to go and see a Pulmonary Doctor and have a sleep study done. I myself was a very loud snorer and was always tired after having "slept" all night. For the sleep study test you go into the hospital around 10:00 pm and they attach all these little electrodes on you and then you just go to sleep like you normally would. While you are sleeping ( in a hotel room setting) they monitor your heart rate, breathing, movements etc. The next morning you are sent home.
In about 2 weeks if you are found to have sleep apnea you will be called to come back in to get fitted and tested for a c-pap machine. Which is just like the previous night that you spent there except for this time you will sleep with the c-pap machine.

I was terrified at first and thought there is no way I could sleep with the c-pap machine, but after I got my results and realized that I had multiple episodes during the night were I stopped breathing and that I never truly went into a deep sleep at night. I decided I would figure out how to handle it.

The c-pap has changed my life so very much as well as my spouses. My spouse can actually sleep at night now without having to hear me snore, I have more energy as I now sleep soundly, and the best part is that because of the c-pap I decrease the risk of doing damage to my heart.

I hope this helps.

Well for starters, you don't have to have surgery for sleep apnea. I have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine every night. My husband told me that I would snore and stop breathing for a few seconds at a time. Has your friend noticed her boyfriend stop breathing during his sleep at all? I think he needs to go through a sleep test to see if he has sleep apnea as this can cause excessive snoring. Also being overweight can cause snoring as well...which if her boyfriend is overweight, then perhaps losing weight he will not snore as much. At any rate, I would suggest to your friend for her boyfriend to have a sleep test done to see if he has sleep apnea and go from there. Good luck to your friend and her boyfriend.

There is nothing that will cure your myopia other than surgery. You can't have the surgery until you are at least 21, because your vision is still changing. Here's the bad news. You will get more nearsighted because your eyeballs will continue growing. There isn't anything you can do that will stop it. There isn't anything you can do that will make it worse. They will grow no matter what you do. Get yourself a cool pair of glasses.

My father in law snores real bad, he too does not want surgery. From what I remember they attached him to a machine, cause he actually stops breathing at times, he hated this, so he sleeps on an angle not flat, pillows underneath his back, almost like your sitting, like slouching. His snoring isn't has bad now, but he still does snore.........not as bad as before.

There are a couple of new products out that can be purchased over the counter at the pharmacy. I would ask the pharmacist for his advice. They are supposed to work. Ask him if there is a money back guarantee.
Good luck.

If he's willing -- his doctor orders -- to undergo a sleep study he may find that he needs a CPAP machine. See attached link.
