What makes you so convinced you have asthma? Your family doctor is very experienced in diagnosing simple conditions such as asthma and there are tests he can do if he thinks your clinical symptoms sound asthmatic in nature. If you have been to see him and told him your symptoms and he doesn't think it sound like asthma, why don't you believe him? There are side effects and risks associated with any medication, including inhalers, many of which contain steroids, and if the doctor doesn't think the benefits would outweigh the risks, you should trust his judgemement. He has spent many years at university studying medicine - what is your qualification to diagnose yourself with asthma??!!

Maybe you need a second opinion. There are tests that can be done to diagnose you if your doctor will order them. I don't know how old you are, but your mother should give you a choice of who your doctor is. Ask about having a PFT-Pulmonary Function Test. It is several different breathing tests that can tell your doctor if you have an obstructive lung disorder-Asthma for example. They can also give you a breathing treatment after the tests and repeat them 10 min after the treatment to see if there was any improvement. That will tell your doctor whether it is reversible with meds or not. Hope this helps you.

Maybe you need to get some more tests done. A doctor can actually get in trouble if he/she doesn't give proof that a patient needs meds, so take all the tests they ask you to do and maybe reccommend some that you find out about online. If you genuinely have asthma and the doctor denies it, they can actually get sued and/or fined for that. Also, have you ever considered the possibility that it might not be asthma, but something almost exactly like it? Just tell your doctor all the symptoms you have and hopefully it'll work out. Good luck and Happy New Years!

Hi...I'm asthmatic and I know what you mean when no one seems to believe you that you do have it. You do have to go through a series of tests to know if in fact you do have it or not. For this, you need to see a respiratory specialist. He will no doubt send you for testing at a respiratory therapy center where they will do testing on your airflow with and without an inhaler. If your doctor isn't cooperative in helping you to find out why you have breathing problems then I would seek another physician. Most of the time, you have to be referred by a family physician to see a specialist. I'm wondering if you are overweight as your breathing problems could be related to that as well and you can get asthma for being overweight. I know this for a fact as I'm overweight. Good luck in finding someone who will at least listen to you!

Hello are you sure you have asthma? I have had it for25 years
and maybe you just have allergies which is sometimes bad but if you had it you would need an inhalier or nebulizer like most do because you can't breath without one you can die from an attack
sudden difficulty in breathing, and a tight feeling in the chest and
out of breath good luck!

Believe me doctors are fond of over diagnosing asthma, b/c inhalers producing companies urge doctors to always prescribe some inhalations, and other companies also urge them to prescribe medication for asthma. These companies spend Million dollars advertising their products especially in doctor's offices.
Your doctor is sincere, and doesn't want you to get addicted to those medications for life.
Try to be more in Fresh air, and not in ventilated air of buildings, as your diagnosis could be: Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)

Get a second opinion by an experienced pulmologist-asthmologist (and you'll have to undergo some serious investigations). If the findings are OK, even better for you, if not there are successfull asthma treatments.

Ask your doctor to do a Pulmonary Function Test and this will show them that you are being truthful since you can not lie or cheat the machine. It is the test that I use in the hospital to help me treat patients with lung conditions. Best of luck.

how do you know that you do?
I'm not saying that you dont, as you may well do, but i think that you should go and see another doctor. If you aren't asthmatic however and doctors have told you this i think that you may need to trust them when they say that they dont.
