As long as you're not running a fever, having shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, coughing up large amounts of phlegm, it sounds like a virus. If it persists for another few days, then maybe. Another thing to consider, is anyone else in your life sick with similar symptoms? If it is in fact a virus the doctor wouldn't be able to help you. You'll just have to let it run it's course, and treat symptoms. (Tylenol for fever, etc.)

If it's just a cough get yourself some cough medicine. I would recommend Robotussin w/ alcohol. If you have mucus in your throat you should also gorgle with warm water and salt. Just put salt in warm water and gorgle but do not swallow. Of course you will swallow some but most of it should be spit out. If you do this, this should help along with the medicine. Now... If you've taken the over the counter medicine already and it's not working, you have allergies and you'll need to get allergy medicine related to cough. You may see this medicine associated with sinus. Even though you didn't mention that anything else was bothering you; remember that your throat, nose and ears are all connected together. - I don't know what state you live in but there must be either a 24hr. Sav-on, CVS, or Rite-Aid somewhere. Good luck.
If you do not have access to any of these things, drink a
hot-tardy.
Ingredients: tea, sugar (honey preferrably), lemon and rum or brandy. You'll only need about 2 or 3 cap fulls of the brandy or rum. This helps with almost anything.
Good luck and Happy New Year!
You may not need antibiotics you just may be treating your syptoms wrong. Most people have allergies and don't know it.

I would go to the doctor when you can. It could be bronchitis or croup which both are treated with antibiotics. If it feels like someone is sitting on your chest it is probably mucus (I get this feeling when I have an asthma attack). Have you tried a cough syrup with a mucus thinner? (guaifasen) Could be what you need to get rid of it. Robitussin makes one and you can try until you get to the doctor. If you have a fever or chills you should try Tylenol until you go to the doctor, too. Sounds like an infection.
