I think that cakes are such a popular item because in the past the ingredients to make cakes were so expensive.Sugar and other sweenteners were only used by royalty. Yes, perhaps towns people had small amounts here and there but not enough to produce wonderful cakes. I think that the tradition like have jewlery and money has trickled down and become common place. I was told that for weddings people would bring different sized cakes to celebrate the occasion. They would be stacked and that is what produces the wedding cakes--oftentimes stacked--that we see today.

"Mrs smarty" is right...

These sugary sweet desserts were reserved for special occasions for sugar was a very rare and pricey commodity back in the day...

Generally only the wealthy had enough to do anything with. Once the price came down and sugar became more abundant, the poorer people hit it hard and there is no turning back.

Like the saying goes "I don't know what the party is for, I am only here for the cake" HA HA !!

Happy 2007!!

WOW! That is a real chin scratcher and a wonderful question. I think it is probably because long ago, sugar and sweets were reserved for special occasions. And you know us sugar loving Americans, why get rid of a sugar laden tradition. This is just my opinon though. But I really like this question. Makes me want to start giving my kids a fruit tray for their birthday instead of a cake, much healthier!

the cake is a symbol , just like for holiday reasons, with it being once a year, most people don't eat sweets, but will consider, a birthday the special occasion, it's bin that way for decades and is most prefered., and very sweet , delicious, and a weight gainer, so people are glad that it only happens once a year.

because cake was a special treat in the old timey days when people were poor/didn't have much and it tasted delicious back then. They also worked harder to burn all those calories. Those days will be here again. Read my lips :-O
