It's a holiday week-end, but I know I have an outbreak of genital Herpes. I've known my husband had the virus and we've been safely managing the condition for the 19 years we've been together, but our "luck ran out" I guess.
I've read a lot and I plan to get to a doctor first thing next week, but in the meantime, can anyone out there tell me of what they may use to ease the discomfort of the painful blisters?
I started taking warm baths with 1st Epsom Salts and today regular salt. I've dried out the area and I'm wearing a dress with no underwear on. I read on a UK site to use Vasilene; other sites say use no ointments or creams. I tried using pure corn starch on it, too.
Can you help with any ideas that may work for you?

P.S. For any of you who have a partner with this virus and you don't have it, be very careful and use condoms as much as possible. My husband usually felt the on-coming of his outbreaks, but this one time he didn't :(

Thanks for taking the time to answer; I really appreciate it! Just curious, why is warm/hot water not good? Before getting anwers, I sat in the tub (in warm/hot water.)

I got diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about seven yrs ago, when I was still attending college and had a mindless one-night stand. I'd been diagnosed with genital herpes many years ago and had no idea from whom I got them from. I have been most fortunate to not have any outbreaks since being diagnosed because I've been following the doctors orders. Keep the area dry; by wearing cotton underwear. Never go without underwear or wear other materials too long because the genital area perspires, even w/o underwear. Your husband should do the same, because as long as he has outbreaks and you get yours under control; you will break out again. A good powder with baking soda/cornstarch workes for me. And keeping the area clean and dry.

Yes, I knew that. It's an annoying ad, but you'd be surprised how many people do not know that they can spread or get genital herpes between outbreaks.

Valtrex is one of the better medications available. Valtrex is the actual brand name for Valacyclovir Hydrochloride. It comes in pill form to treat herpes, herpes simplex or cold sores, in addition to shingles and chicken pox.
While it is true that Valtrex is one of the best as a cold sore remedy, it is not cheap. A 500 mg pill will cost approximately $6.00 each, while a 1000 mg pill will run $10.00 each. Taking four of the 1000 mg pills will cost you $40, but if you are suffering from a cold sore, I consider it money well spent.
I have a friend who suffers from several bouts with cold sores throughout the year. He has tried every cold sore remedy, cold sore medication, and every other home remedy for cold sores. Nothing has worked for him like Valtrex.
He starting taking Valtrex just as the instructions say to do, at the first sign of a tingling sensation. He took two 1000 mg pills twice a day for one day. The cold sore went away without ever breaking out. it never broke the surface. This was amazing.
If you suffer from cold sores, then you know that when they break out you're looking at 10-14 days of an ugly, painful cold sore. If you're taking Valtrex this won't happen. Compared to any over-the-counter cold sore remedy, there is no question about which is the best.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. L - Lysine is an over the counter natural supplement that works very well and eliminates break outs. It's very inexpensive also!
Other than that try soaking a wash cloth in hot as you can stand it water and epson salt and applying it to the area.
