About a year ago I had broncidus, and I had gotten a HORRIBLE cough. It still has not gone away after all this time, and my doctor simply gave me an inhaler for it. The inhaler is not helping, & I'm not sure if it could be serious. Any idea what could be keeping this cough with me ? (And also, I do not have conditions like asthma.)

Since a couple of you said something about allergies, I want to say that I am POSITIVE that I don't have them.

It can take a long time to recover from bronchitis or pneumonia. However, it should not take a year, unless the lungs were damaged during the initial infection. In that case, an inhaler used for asthmatics can help.
If you have insurance, ask your doctor if he could refer you to a pulmonologist. This specialist can test your lungs, how well your lungs expand, and offer additional treatment if needed.
Also, please ask your doctor to evaluate whether you could have had a blood clot. This is a serious situation because clots can break off (from leg blood vessels usually) and travel (forn an emboli) to the lungs, heart or brain. My daughter had a persistent cough after bronchitis....then found she had blood clots in her lungs.
Don't assume or fear you have any more serious problem -- consult a physician. If you have to, or if your breathing worsens, go to an ER for a second opinion. There are also free clinics if you have no insurance.
Are you sure you don't have allergies? That can cause persistent coughing too.
Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Get some "Delsyn". This is an over the counter cough suppresant medication. It is alcohol free. It is a liquid that is in a orange colored box. This is at all pharmacy departments at the grocery and discount stores. It is very helpful. If you have nasal drainage then take some Mucinex DM/Cough. That will help with the cough and the drainage. A lot of times people have a cough because of nasal drainage. This can be from airborne allergies or colds. I know this sounds really weird, but it has incrediable results. Put "Vicks Vapor Rub" on the bottom off both feet. Then put on your socks for the night. Tomarrow you will feel so much better. Weird yes!!!!! But it does work and well worth the little effort. p.s. If it is viral- then antibiotics will not make it go away. Bacterial infections are helped from antibiotics. That's why so many people are becoming ammune to antibiotics because they think they need antibiotics for every little thing! Get better quickly. :)

I have EXACTLY the same problem! I was admitted to the hospital, and they put me on an inhaler. I also had broncidus. Well, just take your inhaler more often and tell the doctor if the inhaler is still not working. You might want to try cough medicine or seeing an allergist, because it might have something to do with allergies.

You should go to an allergist for this. I don't know about the coughing business, but my mother also has broncidus, which she had for AGES. She coughs so much at times you may think if she is ever going to stop, and at times it gets annoying to me, because when I talk to her she wil start coughing, and I have to stop, because then she can't hear me that well. I tried to tell her to quit smoking, because one time she did quit smoking (She has been smoking for MANY years) and she rarely coughed. But stress hit her and she started smoking again. If you see the allergist, you may be able to get better medications for your broncidus.

I freaked when my doctor did this to me. I went to a different doctor and found out I had allergies. The inhaler is a steroid. I now take medicine for allergies instead of a cold and they work much better. It is the constant drainage of your sinuses that are causing your cough. Find out what you are allergic to and Walla. Hope this helps.

We change our pillows every January; get new ones, and burn or throw away the old ones. This became a "tradition" when my son had an unexplained cough 12 years ago; we went through doctor prescribed medication; chest X-rays; visit to allergist for testing.
Finally, we had come across an article in a women's' magazine where a reader wrote in a scenario similar, and solved it by changing pillows. It worked for her, and worked for my son, and throughout the years has kept our colds and coughs to a minimum!
Don't need to invest in pillows; just buy the cheap ones, and toss them after a year! Good buys on pillows in January; that's why we chose that date!
Best wishes to you!

Go see a different doctor. Coughing can be a sign of lung or respiratory disease, as well as lung cancer. It also may be much less serious, but you should go get it checked out by someone else.

You should be tested for HIV/AIDS if you are active...a cough that doesn't go away for a year tends to lead me to the conclusion that your immune system is in really bad shape...you may also want to test your home/apt for asbestos and mold...
