How old are the ladies or what type of a gathering is it? You could have a Mary Kay lady there to do make-overs, you could do Hollywood Red Carpet and have everyone dress to the nines, or the opposite do a PJ's party, you could do a picnic theme and move all the furniture aside and put blankets on the floor with food in picnic baskets, You could do a Moroccan theme and have a belly dancing demonstration, or a Medieval theme (my daughter is in our town's Renaissance and they send small groups to parties),

You could do a winter theme with a winter craft activity like candlemaking or quilting...

You could do a Tupperware, MaryKay, HomeDecor or Naughty Nighty party - there are tons of home sale companies who will send a rep to do a "party" in your home and all you have to do is provide snacks...

You could have a Baked Potato Party (where you provide big baked potatoes and everyone brings a topping to share)

You could make it a 70's party where everyone wears tie dyed stuff or bell bottoms or whatever they were wearing back then... have a lava lamp and the appropriate music going plus maybe a disco ball or some black lights and posters...

I agree with the Hawaiian or luau/beach theme. It's fun to get away from winter by January! Grass skirts or beach attire... everyone bring a beach towel and do ham, Kings Hawaiian rolls, a fruit platter, tropical drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic strawberry daquiris and pina coladas!) and maybe some other snack foods to round it out... go to a party store for Hawaiian music/beach music CD and plastic pineapples/coconuts to serve drinks in :)

I love the hat idea. Also the PJ idea. You could have a theme dictated by the food (ie; italian, greek, japanese, etc) or how about aound a time period such as 50's, 60's, or 70's. Even the 1700's or 1800's

If it's a day party do a recipe exchange and have each one bring the dish already made for everyone else to sample. If it's a night party I would rent a movie and have each person bring a munchie for the intermissions.

What kind of party? Well everyone could bring a dish. I would think a Genealogy theme would be nice. Have everyone come with names, dates, and locations of their parents, grandparents and great grandparents and try to make family connections. Have them bring their laptops if they have them and access ancestry.com, (and the free sites- rootsweb.com, cyndi's list, alhn (american local history network), census_online, family search, and type the names and dates in. The theme would be genealogy, who doesn't want to know their heritage. I did it and it's lots of fun!. I'm a dar member.
