How would one go about enlisting with a chance at Scout Sniper? Or is this something where they choose you? I would like to enlist, but only as this. I don't want to be told, "They may pick you" then not, and my MOS be something else. If no one knows, could someone refer me to where I could find out other than a recruiter? I'd rather not be getting calls from them 24/7 about if I'm joining or not. Thanks alot.

I want to basically see "Scout Sniper" somewhere on my papers. Assuming of course that I pass the course. I don't mind being temporarily assigned to something else, just as long as my MOS is that and I don't end up doing patrols / cooking / driver etc..

Yak Rider, like I said, I haven't talked with a recruiter. I don't want them on my *** 24/7 about joining. I had that experience with Army and Navy. No thanks.
If I can just be guaranteed to get the opportunity to atleast try out for Scout Sniper then that would be enough. I realize not everyones qualified for it. But as long as I'm given the chance, if I fail, then it would be entirely my fault.

What did the Marine Corps recruiter tell you when you asked?

If you're enlisting in the active reserves, you can choose whatever specific MOS you want that's available in the Reserve unit you want to serve in. If you're enlisting in active duty, you need to score a high overall score on the ASVAB (I think around 50), to choose 3 MOS fields you want to enlist as. However, you will not choose a specific MOS in that field that you are able to get selected for to go to MOS school after MCT if you're active duty. It's based on the needs of the Marine Corps. To find the recruiter, go to Yahoo!'s yellow pages or find a phone book at your house and look up "military recruiters". Don't call 1-800-Marines or go Marines.com. They might choose for you a recruiter that might be very far away from where you live since they don't know about your town/city, nieghborhood, or the streets. Then you have to travel long distances to see that recruiter when there could be another recruiter near where you live that could help you. That's what happened to me. Good luck.

As far I know, and remember, you can not sign up to be a scout/sniper. Being a scout/sniper basically requires applying to the school once you are in and serving within a unit. You will need to have done real well on the rifle range as well as have a high P.F.T. score. To help your chances of getting accepted to scout/sniper school I would enlist as an infantry Marine ( M.O.S. 0300). I was an 0341 (infantry - mortarman) and I remember the training NCO in my unit asking for Marines whom would like to attend scout/sniper school. Unfortunately, like I said, I do not believe you can have it in writting at the time of enlistment. As was mentioned, find a good recruiter and ask them or even look up an infantry reserve unit and call and ask them - they may be able to help you out and answer your question better than me.

Back when I joint the service almost 20 years ago my ASVAB exam grade was low and that is what exactly states the military Branch that you will qualify for. To shorten it down for you without CHEATING YOU , get a high score and then get with a REAL RECRUITER because whether they tell you or not they also have to meet a quota of recruitees in order to stay in that LAY BACK position... I also wanted to be a SNIPER and the MOS is supposed to be 11B series and there is no specifics other than you become one according to your shooting range score. I am old school and I am still serving with pride, I wish you the best.

Scout sniper is an advanced school for infantrymen. Once you graduate boot camp your MOS will be 0300 (Basic Infantry), then based on your shooting skills while in the infantry they MAY select you. You first need to prove to everyone that you can in fact hit a target, and not at close distances. It may be something that you will have to apply for a couple of times before being selected. Good luck with this!

There are no guarantees of assignments in any branch of the military. They put you where they need you. The option you signed up for is meaningless.

You can request a certain job when you apply but they are more than likely going to place you where they need you the most.

The best position for them to pick you is on all fours (Navy especially).
