I'm drilling a hole in my bathroom wall, but I hit masonry/brick after drilling through the plasterboard. I need to drill an extra say 5mm before the screw will fit. What should I do, continue to drill a bit more into the masonry with a stronger drill bit?

You need a masonry bit.
You need a hammer drill.
You need a plug.

And once you go into brick, you will also need a plug for the screw to go into. A plasterboad fixing will not work if brick work is directly behind the plasterboard... Plasterboard fixings are inteded to be used when there is nothing present behind the plaster board for hollow spaces.

If you are using a masonry drill then continue drilling to the depth you need. Drill to the depth of the wall plug and not the length of the screw as the plug must go right into the hole and be flush with the wall when in. I have assumed that you did intend using a plug as the screw would not catch and hold otherwise. If you drilled through the plasterboard and you went through small space or a void before hitting the masonry then you need to get a plaster board plug for the screw. If there was no gap then an ordinary plug of the correct size will do.Best of luck. Happy New Year.

Buy a masonry bit and drill into the masonry because if your using the screw to fix anything to the wall plasterboard won't take much weight. So drill a bit deeper and possibly use a longer screw into a rawlplug .

It really does depend what you have hit. If it is breeze block or brick a simple masonary bit in a hammer drill will do it. If you have hit a concrete lintel then only a heavy duty SDS drill will get through.

Biggest concern is if you have come in contact with metal - it isthere for a reason and a hole through could hit cables or if an RSJ you have no hope of getting though and holding up anything.

Will a short plug and screw do the job?

If what you are fixing to the wall is on the heavy side then using smaller screws in just plasterbord won't hold it for long. You need a hammer drill, a good masonry bit and perseverence.

Well, use a stronger drill bit. Thats what my dad had to do to put our 48 inch tv up on a wall. He kept using stonger drill bits until he noticed there was an old beer can in the wall. Yea, our house in filled, (literally) with the weirdest things. We finally got it through and out. If that doesn't work, than try gently making a little crack or hole in the brick.

You need a good masonry bit. You should be able to get a decent one at any hardware store. Go to one you are familiar with and ask for help. Most will be glad to assist you. Tell them what you need and what you need it for and exactly what you are drilling through or at least as close as you can tell!!

masonry drill bit or cut a bit off the screw

That is an option, but you'll need an anchor for the screw in the masonry. Is cutting 5mm off the screw an option?
