My cat loves running after and fetching a hair band which I throw for her. After 5 minutes she goes and drops it in her water bowl. She then comes back and waits for me to go and get it and throw it all over again. Why would she do this? I can't see it imitating any cat behaviour in the wild.

I thought my cat was the only one! :) She drops her fur mouse in the water dish, I thought she was trying to drown it.

The most common answer for your question is that cats see their food/water area as a safe part of their territory. That particular area of their territory doesn't change from day to day.

Cats put their favorite toys—or toys they have recently enjoyed—away in that place to keep it safe.

In the wild, cats often take their prey back to their "nest" area, and hide it from predators. Indoor cats don't really have a "nest," so they often consider their food and water dishes as the "safest" areas within their "territory."

1: she may think it's food and like any wild or house cat they gather up things they catch like mice, fish, frogs or small animals. they usaly do this for a much longer and funner launch.
2: She may want to keep it as a trophy keping it in one place and wanting another. she'll do this to try to tell you "hey look how smart i am i caught all these things".
3:she may just want attention.
4:after catching it she may want a drink and when she gets a drink she forgets about it and leaves it there.
5:she may just be messing with you!

Haha my cat does the same thing, he also puts them in his food bowl, my roommate theorizes that he thinks they're hungry/thristy and is trying to help them out.

It's typical cat behavior. It may be a play response, it maybe they want to clean the objest. I have one that soaks his fur mice so they are easier for him to defur/skin them.

Cats aren't stupid, she's worked out that she can get you to play some more by doing that. She's got you trained!

Smart cat, when retrieving it in her mouth it is drying her mouth out, so she drops it in the bowl to moisten it, very cleaver moggy.......Happy New Year to you both.
