Mormons and proof of religion for temple/churches?

I've been told that only Mormons are allowed to enter the temple/tabernacles. I want to know how they know if you are a member of their religion or not? Do members have to carry around a card or some identification or do they just take you for your word?

Also, how do they ever get new members to convert if non-members aren't allowed to enter their churches?

Anyone can enter their tabernacles. It's their temples that can only be visited by card carrying (and in good standing) Mormons. They don't ask for identification when entering the temple, because entering the temple is a big ordeal and each entrance is planned prior to its happening. When they enter, everyone who is supposed to be there is known by others.

Anyone can enter a mormon church and are more than welcome to do so. True that only mormons can enter the temples. Chris' explanation pretty much covers letting people in to the temple. I do know that when temples are first built, they have had an "open house" so to speak, so the non-mormons can get an idea of what the temple is and reassure themselves that the mormons are not actually performing strange rituals like cutting ox feet off the animal or any of the other crazy ones I have heard.
