the thing i love the most is foot prints because they are unique to your baby. besides that, i would wait until maybe he's a year old or so, that way you can get a feel for his personality and get something that reminds you of him. OR you could wait until he is four or so and have a tattoo of a picture that he draws. my tattoo artist has done some of these and they look really good.

I like that you want to have your own design idea when you go to the tattoo artist. Never settle for flash (the crap lying around leftover from someone else's unique design) because someone else already has that on them. Your idea of hands holding a baby sounds beautiful. You wouldn't want to skimp your (permanent) tattoo just because you're trying to fit it into $200. If you get a simple design, you can always add color or other details to it later on. It seems like you want to have the tattoo completed before your child's arrival so I would suggest just getting the hands holding a child for now and than later on (after the child is born, or years later when you can get a feeling for the child's personality you can get other items -like the astrology sign as Frame 313 suggested, or your child's favorite things like Somebody said- added into the picture to truly personalize the tattoo your baby).
Good Luck and Congratulations!

I think that is awesome that you want to get a tattoo for your son. I am planning on getting a tattoo for my grandma who recently fought breast cancer. I think if you want to get a tattoo is should mean something. Which it certainly does to you. I know that a buttferly is common but it is the symbol of new life, change, love and joy. So for those reasons i think a butterfly would fit well with the upcoming birth of your son. Thats just one suggestion. Hope i helped a little bit. Good luck with your tattoo

I agree with the "Magic One" about putting the money into a college fund for your child. However, if you're not going to do this and you simply must get a tattoo, I would suggest a heart or dove with the baby's name and birth date inside. Best wishes on a happy and healthy baby. The best to you and your family in 2007!

Hey (: Congrats on having a baby. Getting his name in script was what i first thought of too and i get your point that this can be a bit dull. Maybe add a symbol or image that makes you think of your son while you were pregnant. Or maybe get his D.O.B. instead of his name. Hope i've helped :)

Go to www.tlc.com/miamiink or watch Miami Ink on TLC on cable on Tuesday nights at 10:00 p.m. EST.
Check out their designs. That should provide you with suggestions on how to design your tattoo.

I have a friend who does tattoo designs. He specializes in Ambigrams. You can read it upside down and it will be the same thing. Check out his website. If you do decide to get a design, tell him Leo sent you.
the website is http://wowtattoos.com/
