i can honestly say deaf, especially as i am hard of hearing anyway and my hearing is getting worse. you can adapt to either, but i would rather see where i am going. i have learnt some sign language and started to learn how to lip read

In 1999, I suffered encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and was both deaf and blind for several weeks. My sight returned first, with my hearing coming back about a month after.

People never believe me when I say that being deaf was much worse for me personally. Both are terrible things, but at least when you are blind you can remember what things looked like, and while difficult, life without sight can be adapted to.

Deafness is terrifying. People talk to you and theres no way of understanding that communication until you can lipread. People can't tell if you're deaf until you inform so generally they think you are being rude by not responding, then treat you like an idiot by shouting at you.
For the entire time I was deaf, I felt trapped and disoriented and was terrified about what was happening that I couldn't hear - ie something coming up behind you.

I know how lucky I am to have recovered, but it gave me a real insight to how difficult life being blind or deaf must be.

if i had to chose which i dont like doing really it would be deaf as like many of the others have said you can learn sign language etc and still enjoy a wonderful world - my older brother was born half deaf. we have had a number of people working where i do who have hearing problems and also a number of customers and they are an absolute delight to be with.
i would rather not be blind as i would miss out on so much - ie family, friends etc
but saying that there is a bloke who has just been employed with us who is extremely partially sighted - i work in a travel centre for one of the big private train operators - and although he is on a trial period for 6 months - this is for all new employees he is settling down quite well. the office has to be adapted a bit but we are getting around that.
the only very sad thing with this bloke is that he has a terrible attitude problem - and thinks that just because he is there things will be done quicker. we have told him to dream on - we work for the rail industry where as a lot of people have experienced that they do not give a damn about the passengers and staff - just their profit margins.
some people use their disability to their advantage - that is so so wrong - we are all the same in this world

I would rather be deaf for the simple fact that you can still see the world around you and know where you are going. I say this because I have a grandmother that is blind and I know how she feels .

Deaf. Like many people who've answered this question, I'd rather be able to see where it is that I'm going, and to see the Beauty of Nature, than to be Blind.

I've read also in a book by Oliver Sacks called Seeing Voices(the neurologist) that being deaf is far worse but i'd rather be deaf because if you don't want to hear sth u cannot close close ur ears but you can close ur eyes, espcially right now with all the noise & harrassment I get from neighbours, I don't want to hear their voices, ehmm actually i'd like to be both I don't want to look at them either!
